Wow, way to rich for my blood, guess I'll have to go with my original plan of sticking an LS7 in a SS or 1LE or pick up a nice used Z06. Man since the Camaro came out, I wanted one with the LS7

It's priced where it needs to be, SMS 302's were in the $65k range, keep in mind this Z-28 isn't a drag car, GT500's are $65k new, Roush stage 3's hit $75k also. It's a monster N/A non-boosted track car! Not for everyone.

I think the z/28 is an awesome car and I'm glad to see that moniker back in the GM lineup. I was hoping for an MSRP under $70k, I mean I know the engine is hand assembled and the brakes are expensive but for $5k less you can get a fully loaded Z51 Corvette stingray which has more creature comforts and is equally fast around a track and feels more "nimble". I'm actually excited to see the NEW Z06 unveiled next week...may have to start saving my pennies for that one

Come on it's a TON of car. Don't be a hater just cause you can't afford it. There is no way in hell I could afford one either but I'm not sh*t talking. The closest I can come to a Z/28 is my budget built cammed 1SS/1LE and I am very greatful for that!

I was hoping someone would recognize this comparison, thank you sir. It's really the most reasonable comparison to anything else currently being sold by a North American nameplate.

As Enlightening You also helpfully (and factually! sheesh, finally!) pointed out below the 302S has some stuff the Z does not. It's about $6k at the prices we would pay. Additionally, which he did not mention is the full cage, let's call that $2,000? So, $8k of added value in the 302S.

But the rub is the 302S has a crap rear suspension, so add a Watts Link ($2000), plus a full suspension kit to bring it to the level of the Z, another $6,000 or so, so call that +$8000 to the 302S price.

The final big difference is the brakes. The 302S, for a street car, much less a race car, has terrible, horrible, dreadful brakes. Add something from Stoptech or Brembo that compares to the Z/28 OE setup, and you are spending another $15,000.

Bottom line, fair comparison is Z/28 $75,000+ $8,000 = $83,000. 302S with added upgrades to match Z/28 is $90,000+$15,000+$8000=$113,000.

The 302S can never, ever, be street legal. The Z/28, no problem.

The 302S is no warranty, for anything. The Z/28 is warranty for street and track use!

The 302S has lower revving, lower HP engine.

I'd be quite willing to bet that in a road course time trial, with a stock out of the box 302S vs a stock out of the box Z/28, the Z/28 would be 10% quicker. I know the magazine writers read the forums, make it happen? Use Sonoma or Laguna Seca.

I looked very hard at buying either a 302S or 302R a couple years ago. I'm quite clear on understanding what they do and do not offer. In comparison, for my use, recreational tracking, the Z/28 is the hands down no-brainer choice. And I can drive the Z/28 on the street if I choose to.

The other elephant in the room that no one talks about is the value of a factory engineered track car. I've had my fill of the bolt-on game, and it is a massive pain in the ass and time sink. How much time/energy/money have I wasted mucking with making something work and troubleshooting setups- a lot. The GM team has already dealt with all this sh*t, so all I have to do is drive and pay for tires and gas. In my world, the value of that is...priceless.

People complaining about $75k have no idea what's involved with building up a fast, reliable track car.

Oh yeah- for those of you that care, take a look at completed EBay listings for 302S's. Max bids for zero-mile new cars are running high $67k'ish. Further proof that the Z/28 pricing is spot-on (it's more car out of the box than 302S).

I've went back and forth on how to word this.
GM has made a limited run of a very high performing car at a high price. They can hang their hat on this and trumpet it about saying look at what we can do, good for them. GM needs to be careful here that they do not alienate many of their fans, buyers and potential buyers though. While the current SS and 1LE option is a good bargain it is not a great bargain. I like the SS, I've bought two of them new. I could go and buy another brand and get similar or better performance for similar money, less money in some cases. I really hope they do not neglect the mass produced cars that represent the bulk of the buying public to simply focus on a high priced halo version while performance is allowed to slide in the lower models such as the SS.

Giving us a car like this makes for conversation but thats about it. Internet fanboys will use its cost and performance as fodder for internet chatrooms but trying to use someone elses car to prove your point is like trying to satify your woman with someones elses... money.

The invoice price on a 2012 ZL1 was around 52K. What's the invoice on the Z28? Maybe this will shine a better light on the high price.

I guess the z28 is not for everyone, thats why GM has put this high price on it ,if not every one will have one. Also considering that few will be produced Now its like everything else on a business market, depending on your budget thats what model they have. V6 camaro (20' s) , SS CAMARO (30's) , 1le camaro (40's) , zl1 camaro (60's) z28 camaro (75's)... now wich one can you afford.
