Rear-drive Pontiac Grand Prix replacement spied in Australia

By BOB GRITZINGER

AutoWeek | Published 01/16/07, 9:42 am et

General Motors will draw on its Australian Holden division for a new rear-wheel-drive sedan to replace the Pontiac Grand Prix. The Holden Commodore SS will be rebadged as the 2008 Pontiac G8 when it arrives in the U.S. late this year or early next year, according to published reports.

GM vice chairman Bob Lutz spilled the beans on plans for the car at the Detroit auto show and promised that more details will be forthcoming at the Chicago show in February.

“It’s such a logical thing to do,” Lutz said. “The volume range is 30,000 to 50,000. It depends on how we price it.” Reports indicate pricing will be around $25,000.

The latest Pontiac will draw on the Holden Commodore that went on sale in Australia in August 2006. The right-hand-drive model must be re-engineered for left-hand drive for the U.S. Spy shots reveal that work is well under way, along with new sheetmetal, to distinguish it from its Aussie cousin.

G8 will come with a choice of V6 or V8 engines, including a 6.0-liter 362-hp, 390-lb-ft V8 coupled to a six-speed manual or automatic transmission.

GM previously sold a rebadged Holden Monaro as the Pontiac GTO in the United States, and despite the car’s strong appeal to enthusiasts, sales of the 2004 to 2006 models did not meet expectations.

GM sure is upping it's HP in many different lines of cars....a great thing if you ask me. Even though it looks like a Zebra and I can't really make out the lines, it seems like it could be a nice ride.

Hi, I'm new here.
I'm a total car freak (GM-fan, of course!), and I've been a member at GM Insidenews forums since around June 2006. I first heard about this site when someone at GMI posted a link to an article here a few months back, and I've been frequently visiting this site the last few months, and I finally decided to join.

Anyways, back to the topic. One of the guys at GMI thinks that the pic that is posted at the top of this page may actually be the new Holden-based Buick. It's the first post at this link. Very interesting.

The front headlights remind me of an opel astra for some reason.

Saturn Astra and Pontiac G8 at Chicago Auto Show

Also Chevrolet Corvettes special editions to debut

General Motors will introduce the all-new 2008 Saturn Astra and 2008 Pontiac G8 at the Chicago Auto Show next week, building on the momentum of the North American International Auto Show in Detroit – where the Saturn Aura captured the North American Car of the Year award and the Chevrolet Silverado claimed the North American Truck of the Year award.

Saturn continues its product revitalization with the new Astra compact car, along with the 2008 Vue Red Line and Vue Green Line hybrid. The Astra marks the fifth all-new vehicle in Saturn’s lineup, and is the last step in a complete reinvention of the brand’s showroom in less than 20 months.

The G8 sedan represents Pontiac 's continuing commitment to rear-wheel-drive performance, and adds to the G6 GXP and Torrent GXP recently introduced in Detroit. Additionally, a pair of special-edition Chevrolet Corvettes will debut.

The Chicago Auto Show is open to the public Feb. 9-18 at McCormick Place.

GM also will bring the cars that caused a stir in Detroit : the Chevrolet Volt electric car concept, the Chevrolet Camaro convertible concept, the 2008 Chevrolet Malibu and the 2008 Cadillac CTS.

“It is truly an exciting time at GM, because every few weeks, we get to show off all-new models that reinforce the fact that we’re not only back in the car market, we’re back with the intention to lead it,” said GM North America president Troy Clarke. “The common thread linking all of these great new products is our renewed commitment to design excellence and technological innovation.”

Complementing GM’s new vehicles at the Chicago Auto Show is an all-new exhibit that is the auto show equivalent of an art gallery. It features a distinctive, more intuitive layout that allows visitors to experience GM’s eight individual brands in gallery-type settings.
I'm pretty amped about seeing this car, especially after seeing the abcnews interview w/ Rick Wagoner. Looks pretty aggressive and like the kind of image builder the Pontiac brand needs. It deserves a chance.
