Winter Storage
It's that time of year, and it already got a head start here in Alberta.
Have perused several threads on here regarding storage, the usuals of fuel stabilizer, tender, flat spotting yada yada and one thing that caught me off guard as a new owner is the location of the battery in these cars, more so how much of a pain in the ass it is to get out of the car. As I was planning to take the battery out of the car and put a tender on it but sweet baby Jesus, what a pain. I know lots of folks, more so Americans just put the tender hookups on under the hood, but during winter here in Alberta we'll get stretches of -30 to -50 degree weather, the battery is going to freeze at some point. My tender will not charge if the temp is beyond -20 degrees so there is compensation for that but do y'all just leave the battery in and let it freeze and recharge after it thaws? |

I would remove the battery and store it inside. Not on a cement floor but some wood. Once the battery freezes it’s done.

Will you be driving it at all, if not then just take the battery out. As far as the battery freezing, that's nearly impossible if you keep it fully charged.

I just disconnect the negative terminal so the battery doesn't discharge, that seems a better option these days, just for the reason of the location of the battery...what moron came up with this location, the 5th Gens were so much better with the battery in the spare tire area.

Last year I parked her at a a place that stores cars in their climate controlled facility. All your worries will be abated....but at a price.

^ if only haha, that'd be sweet.
No driving it, parked in the garage for winter already. Going to be -25 with wind chill tonight here but warming up next week, I'll take another run are pulling the battery out then... Not the end of the world but yeah I'd prefer if they had kept it in the spare tire area in this gen. |

If your already parked in he garage then why not install a gas heater for the garage and just keep the temp at 10C? Problem solved!

Is the tender going to keep the battery from freezing when we get a week of -50 degree temps?
That's why I'm not putting the tender on the front connection. I pulled the battery today, the clip on the positive side was a pain in the butt surprise. |

To keep the battery from freezing just use a battery blanket then.
