we all would like to think they are picking the best teams, with best chances of taking home a trophy. But I wonder how little that actually plays into the scenario.
It's all about the money, always will. They are big games aired on national tv, so who is going to draw the biggest viewers. Who has the biggest following, etc. Commercial time is not cheap and people want to make sure they are offering a top game to be viewed. I feel this plays into it more so than stats or losses. |

I think the committee wants a Sabin vs. Harbaugh first round and whoever wins that verses Meyer for the title game. It is about the ratings and the money and the built in hype. How else could Michigan lose 2 of its last 3 games and still be in contention, even if Clemson and Washington win, they may still move UM in because it beat 3 top ten teams and took the number 2 team to two OT's on the road.

Michigan is arguably the 2nd best team in the country. I'd absolutely put them in over Washington, Penn State, and Wisconsin.

Michigan may be good but have not been able to beat Ohio State for last 5 years. Not sure the bowl selection committee would want that rematch. Of course, if do make it, Harbaugh can do his routine of acting like a spoilt 7 yr old throwing a tantrum. Real class act.

He can't help himself, he's wound that tight Hell, they had a Alabama-Lsu rematch in the BCS a few years back. So there is a precedent for it. That wasn't even a playoff, it was for the alleged championship. |

To get the rematch, Michigan will probably first have to beat Alabama. So if it happens, they will have earned it.

The Bama/LSU championship game was obviously the only thing to do since they were the best two teams in the country at the end of that season. No other teams were more qualified for the game. The play off system actually had its first meeting before that game. No system is going to be perfect. Someone is going to be left out. The Penn State game went down as I expected and is the reason I asked the question. Both Michigan and Penn State have an argument that is viable. There will always be seasons that the system in place will be strained.

Four team playoff is just a tease. Eight team will be the next step, but that is only half way in my opinion. A 16 team playoff would be a true playoff that could be done in four or five weeks if you gave a week off for the championship game. This wouldn't be extending the bowl/playoff season any longer than it is already. In the eight team, it would be better to argue over 8th spot, and how 9,10,11, should be in, instead of 5,6,7 are getting left out and deserve to be in. You could say 16 is too many, and that may be true. If you went top twelve and seeded the top 4 with a buy week, say the top four power five conference champions and the fifth plays the 12 seed in the opening week round. That may be the best solution. Four teams leaves to many true contenders and conference champions out of the picture

Except the CFP isn't about making sure conference champions or "deserving" teams make it in. It's about the 4 BEST teams in the country.
I was reading an article the other day about how expanding the playoff bracket would simply lead to crappier regular season games. Take the Ohio State-Michigan game. In a six or eight team playoff, both teams are in, no matter what. The game would've still been intense due to the rivalry but there wouldn't be as much at stake. Then the #7/8 teams or #9/10 teams would start complaining they were left out.

If Penn State displaces someone (they won't) it should be Clemson. Weak, very weak, resume.
It's ironic how the "four best teams" mandate was put in place mainly to stop crappy B1G champions from keeping better teams from getting in. That was when people thought the SEC had the best five teams in the country every year and the B1G was complete trash. Now that a compelling argument could be made that this year's playoff should be Alabama and three B1G teams, people want to claim that conference championships are all of a sudden important again. |

I have to admit, after graduating from a B1G school and living in SEC country, the collapse of the SEC has truly been amusing to watch.
