Spied: Chevrolet Colorado ZR2?

Chevy Colorado ZR2 Caught in Spy Photos
AutoGuide

Quote:
It appears that Chevrolet is turning the Colorado ZR2 concept that debuted at the 2014 L.A. Auto Show into a production model, based on this prototype spied testing.

Although it’s heavily camouflaged up front, the front bumper covers only a fraction of the front tires, suggesting that a version of the Colorado ZR2 concept’s Prerunner-inspired front end is being tested.

The spy photos also hint that the outer corners of the front bumper camouflage can be easily removable so testers have quick access to the truck’s maximum approach angle. There’s also a possibility that the camouflage is hiding King Off-Road racing shocks, one of the main elements of the concept and a staple among off-road trucks.

The prototype sports a bulging hood scoop along with extra trim tacked onto the wheel arches. The concept had four inches of width added to it, so it’s more than likely the production model will follow in the same footsteps. In addition, the concept sat two inches higher than the standard Colorado and the prototype definitely has improved ground clearance.

It’s worth noting that the prototype’s spare was located underneath the truck like the standard production model. On the concept, the spare tire was mounted in the truck bed, but that was likely for show.

The big question is what powerplant Chevrolet will use. It could be the new 2.8-liter Duramax four-cylinder diesel or a 3.6-liter gasoline-powered V6.

Skid plates, aggressive stance, fender flares, off road tires, it's all there.

If this is a ZR2, big props to GM. The era of being risk averse might almost be over.

Awful, in the 2nd picture I would have though it was a picture of the truck locking up its brakes with nose dive.

I thought the ZR2 concept with a diesel was an awesome smaller truck. Although I think it would benefit alot more with an 8 speed transmission to take advantage of the tq better.

I am waiting to see what the Nissan Frontier with the 2.8l Cummins 4cyl and 8 speed auto is going to turn out like. Supposedly about 220 hp and 400 ft lbs tq. Get less MPG but the 8 speed will make up for it and still get more power and it is needed in a truck. That is why I am surprised gm went with a 6 speed auto. Now a 6 speed manual would have been nice though.

It would be sweet if they put the LT1 with the A8.

I wonder how much of the realistic components from the concept will make it to production.

Wow that's nice. If I was in the market for a truck that would be it.

Looks nice, hope they don't take forever to build it. Put a V8 in it too for crying out loud.

Theoretically if GM releases this for MY2017, Colorado could win MotorTrend TOTY 3 times in a row.

Looking forward to seeing what the production version looks like. No way they are going to use those wheels....hopefully not.

I actually don't mind a little rake, and I see the usefulness for it (truck is level when hauling) but this one looks like it may have a bit more rake than even I'd like to see.

Glad to see this coming!

That truck would sell big here in Florida.

The midsize trucks will never get a the LT1 with the full 455HP.....I really feel strongly about this. I don't think they will get a V8 period...there is no use for one, now that the V6 is so potent, and there is the diesel for that extra towing power. If you NEED big V8 for towing, you need a full size truck. That only leave the people wanting a sports truck with a V8, and that market is nearly non-existent. Now, if that does happen and they decide to bring back some kind of SS version, or an Xtreme, then MAYBE we'll get a V8, but still doubtful.

An Xtreme Colorado or Canyon with the LT1 would be extremely tempting to me to sell off my Camaro and my current Colorado for it lol. But that said, it would have to be a crew cab, and possibly even 4x4 to be feasible for me. No sport Colorado with the LT1 is getting 4x4.

Regarding the powertrain, this thing looks to be a gasser from the tailpipe.
