Want to make trip to CA with car (Without driving it)
Hi everyone,
I have a lot of family begging me to come to N. California, so I want to make the trip from Arizona sometime during the summer. The thing is, a round trip from there to back is a 2000 mile journey. I don't want to put those miles on my 1LE. I DO, HOWEVER, want to take my 1LE with me so I can do a track day at the Mazda Raceway Laguna Seca. Will it be affordable for me to rent a truck and a car trailer? I'm planning on being there for a week. What's the cheapest way I can make this work? Any thoughts? I know about how many Camaros are being stolen up there, so i'm definitely going to be taking precautions by parking in safe areas and keeping her garaged overnight. Input is appreciated! |

Drive it, man!
I drove to NJ and back in mine. It was definitely worth it.

I drove mine from OKC to Denver and back last April, was the best road trip I'd been on in a long time. I-70 gets pretty bleak in western Kansas so there were lots of opportunities to, well, do some spirited driving.

I hear ya guys, but I have so many rock chips on the front bumper I'm terrified i'm going to get more. That and I'm really hesitant to put 2k miles on the poor thing! I'm going to end up filling up like 3 times going there, and 3 times coming back!

I would drive mine for sure. Unless of course you've got a bunch of tools and a different set of track tires that you will be bringing. If you trailer the car you'll be filling up the same amount or more plus the cost of the rental for both the truck and trailer. Unless you have a tow vehicle.

You are not going to get any more chips in the front driving it there, than driving it on the track.
But to your question, can you rent a truck and haul it. Sure, it's just an additional cost. Deciding if it is worth that cost is totally up to you. |

Bumpers are cheap. Just plan on getting it resprayed/replaced every few years. And your engine isn't even broken in until 20k miles! Get miles on it!

We looked into Amtrak a few years ago. Load the car and ride the train. It was too involved to do it from north Texas.

Budget for a front bumper repaint in a year or two. And the rock-chip problem is solved. Besides....I promise you you'll get more "damage" from a track day like rock chips than you will from a road trip, and 2000 easy cruising miles are like 20 hard track miles. Don't baby the 1LE, my friend, that's not what was built for. Enjoy it, guilt-free. It's not a show car, it's a race car. |
