Just an unfair comparison. If you're strictly talking about pulling something, and all things are "fair", a gas engine is pretty much going to loose to a diesel engine every time in terms of both getting moving, fuel efficiency once it is moving, and most likely engine longevity as well.

Your comparison was to have to take a 5.9L 6 cylinder diesel (sure, it has turbo), and compare it with the 8.1 vortec. 8 cylinders, and more than 2L extra displacement. Even then, the Cummins is putting out that 440 TQ at under 2k RPM. The vortec has it by a mere 15 ft/lb, but isn't making it until around 3k.

If you put those two engines in an otherwise identical truck, I would put money on the diesel to triumph. I'm not saying a gas engine is incapable, nor that you CAN'T beat a diesel with a gas engine, but how much different do you need those engines to be to make that happen?

The blowing soot thing though... ugh... diesels have come a long way to NOT be that dirty. It drives me crazy.

Curious as to how you feel about the diesel swapped Camaro.

I understand that if everything was the same, the diesel would win, but it's the fact that they think diesels are unstoppable. And to be fair, if he didn't have a turbo he wouldnt do anything better than a gasser, look at the old 7.3 non turbo in the ford's, they just sucked. Lol

I actually seen that on Facebook, I thought it was pretty cool, I don't hate diesel engines, nor do I hate black smoke as long as it's on a drag strip or on a pulling strip. I just hate it when fanboys who don't know crap, start throw soot on public roads, and doing and saying all this crap when they don't even pull anything. That 8.1l vortec of my father's was bought for one reason, to pull his trailer with, not to show off in public.

Only thing I hate about diesels are when they blow black smoke in your face.

There are Asshats in every group. Afterall I own a camaro and have been on this fourm for a long time. Lol

I love diesels for their intended purpose ,and I can tell you for a fact that they tow better, haul more and get better MPGs while doing it than there gas counterparts. No comparison in my world, and my business uses them as inteneded. The black smoke thing is foolish though, but like I said Asshats everywhere.

A properly tuned diesel does not "roll coal"....regardless of boost levels or tuners. The guys with the flat brimmed hats bogging a 6spd Cummins at a light to spew smoke annoy the piss out of me. And, Ive owned 3 Cummins and 2 Pstrokes. NONE of them did that for sake of "performance".

I approve of this application. I've met some awfully pretentious self-righteous Prius drivers. They're like the vegans of the car world.

I also approve of this. Usually when I'm in *cough* Mexico *cough cough* and I see a prius, I drop it in third and do my best to pass them in the most obnoxious way possible.

Anything can be beaten. Remember, there is always somebody faster, stronger and smarter.

Diesels are designed to be a work engine, thus the reason they put them in a semi. Your issue with diesels has to do more with maturity of the driver then the fact it is a diesel. No different then making fun of Camaro or mustang owners.

The 5.9L Cummins 12 Valve is a great motor. Cheap and easy to work on and runs forever if you take care of it. I have one with 350K miles, the truck fell apart before I had any issues with the motor. And it runs on a mechanical pump. All he needs to do is turn the pump up for more power.
