Next e-mail in the adventure of the hood insert
I hope this is not old news .....I know the first two paragraphs are but the third paragraph was news to me.
Chevrolet is pleased to announce the current quality assessment on the 2012 Camaro ZL1 has been completed. The 2012 Camaro ZL1 models that were on hold at Oshawa are now available to be shipped to dealers. 2012 Camaro ZL1 production which was suspended is expected to resume by mid-April, 2012. Chevrolet is currently evaluating the remaining 2012 Camaro ZL1 production to determine the impact on the Estimated Production Guide Number that was provided to each dealer late last year. Your District Sales Manager will be providing you an update on your Estimated Production Guide within two weeks. When production resumes, the 2012 Camaro ZL1’s standard black painted carbon fiber hood insert will continue to experience constrained availability. To alleviate the issue, all Camaro ZL1’s produced with the optional exposed carbon fiber weave hood insert (RPO: B92) for the 2012 will receive a $600 MSRP option package discount. The $600 MSRP discount will essentially eliminate the $600 MSRP charge for this option. Only those 2012 Camaro ZL1’s produced with RPO: B92 will receive the discount. We thank everyone involved for their patience during this assessment process, and look forward to the first deliveries of the 2012 Camaro ZL1 to consumers in the coming weeks. Sincerely, Russell M. Clark Director – Chevrolet Small Cars, Small Utilities and Performance Cars Marketing |

My brief history,,, I ordered the Exposed CF insert only to get a call from the dealer a few weeks later to say it was on constraint and I had to change to the painted or lose my allotment.
So I changed only to find out a couple of weeks later the painted was now on constraint and the exposed available. Called dealer and was told I could not change because I was at status 3000. I just want my exposed CF insert :( can someone please decipher that e-mail and tell me that they simply mean they are putting ECF's inserts on all new production |

Well I'm at 1102 and I ordered mine with the painted insert. Does this mean they will just give me the exposed to keep the order going or do I need to call and change it?

I changed mine, but I have no idea if it will help or hurt me in the end...

Sounds like you will be receiving the painted hood if you ordered it due to the exposed be on restraint and also because you were at 3000 when all holds went into affect. I know how you feel, when my dealer told me awhile ago in the first wave of orders. That I would have to get the painted hood instead of the exposed carbon fiber I decided to wait and hope it would go off restraint. It's hard to wait but its a choice I decided to make. This is one of the problems that could come up when over 25% of the car has new parts be introduced like the fiber hood. The possibilty of problems during production can pop up. But it sounds like the painted hood might become the rarer of the two hoods for the MY 2012.

I had the same thing happen to me, along with some others here. What the letter is saying is we are getting screwed out of the $600 credit and we will still have to wait on the Black Insert.

These parts are built by sub-contractors to GM, probably ASC corp in Michigan or someone similar. Initially they may have had issues trying to produce enough exposed carbon fiber units for production, which was why it was on constraint. Once they got that resolved, they then discovered quality issues with their painted units, which was probably why the QC hold was put on. GM and the sub had to work on the issues at hand and figure out what they could do, if they could fix the issues or if not, what were their options.
I think someone posted in one of the other threads (might have been fbodfather) that if you want something that is all GM built or similar, it will cost you alot more money. The auto industry has been using sub-suppliers for many many years, this isn't something new, but occasionally they have issues when ramping up for production that don't show up in their pre-production units, just like GM themselves can experience these same manufacturing units. This same thing happened to the Mustang Cobra when it first came out in the late 90's. Cars were down on power, found the supplier of the intake manifold had not machined the runners fully like there were supposed to. And it isn't just the auto industry. Aerospace, electronics and others run into these same issues. Its part of being a manufacturer. |

I ordered mine (#480) with the carbon fiber insert. As far as I know it was built with it. I spoke to the dealer today and he said he doesn't think it was built with the carbon, it came with the black, if so I am not happy.
I was able to see my window sticker and it shows carbon ordered and the $600 discount. Does anyone know how to tell? My order number is QBZPPP. Thanks in advance for any help |

I am at 1102 or 2030 or whatever. I think at this point if I get a car I will be happy.

I almost feel the same way,,, but I know that I will purchase the exposed if it does not come installed. It seems to me that GM should have went just a step further and also given us (the ones stuck with the black insert) a $600 credit towards the purchase of the exposed insert.

I verified my car has the ECF hood and was pleased at the $600 credit. I really don't why this $600 credit conclusion was reached but I'll take it. Some folks will be happy with this option and some will not. This hood will certainly continue to be a topic of conversation.
