Engine or Motor?

Discussions between many of my friends: is the power house under your hood referred to as an 'engine' or a 'motor'? I have used both, however, some would say the only 'motor' under your hood operates the wipers... thoughts??

A motor is electric is uses currents and magnets to turn. An engine uses the expansion of gases to turn.

Engine for me. It's the same thing as "e-brake" vs "parking brake". I use parking brake but I know what people mean when they say e-brake.

Well, not really the same thing.

E-brake is referring to "Emergency Brake" not Electric Brake..

... "E-Brake" doesn't even register... hand brake, sure... parking brake, sure.

To each their own however i do believe "engine" is the appropriate term and a "motor" typically refers to an electrical drive system.

This has been played out many times.

Yes by original definitions a motor referred to an electrically power item. An engine is fuel powered and an internal combustion object.. In most cases... As we also have steam engines... Symantics arguments can be made either way...

However, the generally accepted reference is that in this case it's interchangeable. After all, there is General Motors, the Ford Motor Company, Bayerisch Motoren Werke, or Bavarian Motor Factory, BMW... Etc...

When I was in the Fire Department we had engineers... Those that operated the apparatus.... Right up until we got an anally obsessed City Manager that stated the only Engineer has a college degree... (Yes his ego was way larger than his capability) and he mandated that the operators be referred to as drivers, not engineers... So we countered with, " what about the guys that operate trains.

I am an engineer by trade (Subsea Engineer) and I use the term interchangeably quite often...

Look at it this way, what is a Turbo? Some will say it's a compressor, and it is, but when originally designed for use in aircraft it was and technically still is a turbo supercharger... Yet I would be derided for referring to my car as twin supercharged... In this day, the shortened version, Turbo, is the accepted term...

I'd rather be called a MotorHead than an Enginehead. Otherwise IDC.

Engine is the correct term but I think we all call it a motor most of the time.
