Im confused.. Why would there be long trails of smoke in the sky and then like a minute later massive explosions as if it happened right next to them? I mean i guess it could be a sonic boom when a meteor enter the atmosphere but it sounds like tank just fired a missile next to the camera..i feel like theres audio clips overwriting the video... someone enlighten me

I will look at this again when I can turn up the sound. There may have been more than one impact, but IDK.... The article mentions people reporting that the whole city smelled like "gunpowder". The Russian military, I am sure, intervened in some way.

It was very erie seeing that thing suddenly appear in the sky like that!

Wow...

And don't forget, NASA TV will start doing a livecast at 2PM Eastern today for coverage of the asteroid that will be passing by earth today.

I heard a scientist this AM that stated that the meteors in Russia had nothing to do with today's asteroid - but that's just one opinion I guess...

Right, sonic boom was the cause, plus a non-cinematic quality camera. And remember, sound travels much slower than light, which is why you see the comet come in and leave smoke trails and THEN hear the boom.

This is freaking awesome, going to be looking for news on this all day

Yep, I'm not sure how fast it was going, but it looked to be going fast enough for the sonic boom to be very far behind. Very, very far behind. Crazy videos! We need more live action shots. Surely somebody over there setup a camera for this...

I found an article stating it was doing 19 miles per second. That would be approximately mach 92.. That's 68,400 miles per hour. 89 times faster than the speed of sound...

I can't wait to hear what Alex Jones says about this.... LOL

I remember when I was a kid, I'm pretty sure now, my Dad found a meteor or some sort of space debris of some sort. We were out in the woods, his buddy had a metal detector and it went nuts on this rock. The rock was about the size of a basketball, he and his friend could barley lift it. I remember them taking it home and took a sledge hammer to it and never could break or even chip it. Can't remember whatever happend to it though.

Yeah, that sounds like a chunk of iron of some sort, pretty cool even if it turned out it wasn't a meteorite

Space.com article says the meteor was traveling in the wrong direction to be related to that asteroid that's supposed to be buzzing us soon:
