Diff gears Help!
Hi guys, I've been looking for a shop to swap out my diff gears to 3.91's I will be providing the oem master install kit as well as new fluids. I will also be dropping the pumpkin myself and delivering it to a shop. Any know of a good shop for this that won't charge me an arm and a leg? I have checked at one shop and was quoted $495 which in my opinion is just a tad high. I understand the labor that has to be put into splitting the cases but I can't justify the price. Any help would be appreciated!

$495 is a bit high but not bad. You can do the majority of the work yourself. Drain it, pull the passenger axle, unbolt, tilt, and drop.
You can pull the cover, remove the carrier, check the carrier bearings and races, and replace the ring yourself easily and with no special tools. The only thing you'll really need the shop for is the pinion inner and outer bearings and races and setting up the backlash and preload. This can save you some money as well. You may be able to get out around $200-$250 and have a good setup.

I just got an email back from a reputable shop (don't want to mention any names) and was quoted $450 to just switch out the gears after I do the labor of dropping the diff and delivering it to them drained. its also about a 45 minute drive each way for me.
still too high in my opinion? didn't want to spend more than $300 for just the install labor. I am very mechanically inclined but I do not have any experience with backlash, preload ect. |

Up to you honestly. Removing and installing the inner pinion bearing is the only part you should leave to a shop if you're good with tools. *Almost* no one needs to set backlash with the AAM factory gears and you just need an inch pound beam torque wrench to set the preload. Everything you need to know can be found with Google searches.
If you're concerned about saving money, you can do it. I highly recommend having someone else press the old pinion bearing off and a new one on. I did mine all by myself outside of the pinion bearing after dicking around with it. http://www.camaro5.com/forums/showthread.php?t=289431

I got in contact with a shop near me that I got recommended too, the owner is going to charge me $250 labor to do the install. Mera Motorsports is the name of the shop, you can check them out on instagram they specialize in Lsx based builds and custom 700hp + donks Lol pretty cool stuff they have. I wasn't going to replace the bearings but maybe I should after 50k miles. Thanks for all the help blakjak
