question about production

im not sure if this was asked already so ima go ahead and ask

im a little confused-y is it that they expect to sell 100,000 cars a year
and there is 10,000 on order, but they cant make them all til the end of october? i mean 10 thousand is only 10 percent of that so wtf?

Why would tend to agree, but I'm sure there's some complicated math and regulations involved we are not aware of.

Well, I think the issue Jeff is that they will make MORE than 10,000 between now and October. Our 10,000 orders will be mixed in with dealer demo cars and others that they are required by law to distribute. In addition, since this is a 2010 car, production will continue into 2010. So the production run will be longer than a typical one would be. On top of that, the 100,000 number was made when the economic situation was different. I would guess that will be reduced down to below 80,000.

Pretty simple answer, they don’t start production at full capacity; they have to ramp production up to where they are running at full capacity. Hence the reason why they are not making the full hundred thousand they are capable of. Just like starting out from a stop light, you slowly make it up to speed, not immediately at that speed when you take your foot off the brake.

It also takes a few weeks to deliver the car to the dealer.

20,000 by October. 10,000 ordered but there's 20,000 allotted and they WILL all be accounted for by dealers. Remember, 1/3rd of the dealers haven't even put in a single preorder yet. That 100,000 is a reaaallly old number so I doubt that's still the target anymore (I'm not sure they'd be able to sell that many if they produce them).

I think the 20,000 by October thing is conservative. They have to allow for a slow ramp up to ensure that quality is there and there's nothing getting screwed up. The last thing GM wants is 20,000 brand new model cars getting recalled because a robot had a missed calibration causing it to miss a weld causing your transmission to blow up after 5000 miles. They also have to allow for constraints at their suppliers, particularly early on because they'll be doing the same thing (for new stuff). They want to make sure they can get ALL of those 20,000 ordered cars to dealers by the date they set. People would much rather get their cars early than late!
