3rd gear grind when cold new SS
Hey guys
Got 600 miles on a 1ss 1le. Sometimes my third gear will get a grind sound going in. This has also happened to second gear. This morning specifically second was notchy and made more of a noise going into gear and then third had a grind like sound. I feel like I'm driving normal but open to the idea I'm driving it wrong or something. It's not all the time. I can swear the trans is butter sometimes and other times it's temperamental (when cold). Idk if this happens when warm because I usually drive the car much more spirited and probably wouldn't hear it. Thoughts? |

I also have same problem; the colder the temp the worse it is. I have a 2019 1ss with 2000 miles. I will be taking into dealer when i get some time to see what they say

I have 25K on my M6 and it is still notchy and cranky on a 1-2 shift when cold. I switched the fluid to Royal Purple SynchroMax about 4k miles ago. It helped but did not eliminate the issue. I have found that this Tremec 6060 just has to be shifted using a firm and deliberate hand especially when cold. If I baby the 1-2 shift when cold - it will balk.

It's known the 1LE trans is notchy especially in cold weather. I don't want to force the synchros when it's cold but like you guys have mentioned the trans does not like cold temps. Once it warms up the shifts should be smooth, I have 12,800 on my 1LE and it was silky smooth in July (consistent highs in the 90-100's / lows mid to upper 80s low 90s), now I let the trans warm up before I do any spirited driving / shifting.

My '17SS has had rough shift issues 1st to 2nd since new and changing to Royal Purple has only helped a little. A GM tech who is familiar with these transmissions says the 2nd gear synchro is the culprit. Others on the forum have suggested shifting over 3k which helps some but it not practical in heavy traffic. Issue does seem to be a little better in warmer temps but not much.

A notchy manual when cold is part of the experience; it's relatively normal.

I don't have a manual right now, but in the past it has been my experience that manual transmissions need to be treated just like engines when they are cold: don't go all boy-racer on them until warm. The only difference is that the engine is getting damaged quietly, while the tranny will bark at you.
On a cold tranny, you can usually avoid grinding by double clutching. |

Normal for my '18 when cold. Seems to be a characteristic of this tranny.

I have a '19 2SS 6M and although the gears don't grind, I do hit resistance periodically shifting up or down into 2 or 3, especially when it's cold. I really didn't experience this problem much at all until temperatures started falling in September/October and now that it's January I notice this every time I take it out. As most have said, letting it warm up before getting aggressive helps, but I've found it doesn't completely prevent this from happening. Backing off and taking another run at the gear usually works as well.
