Re-fuel with engine running?
For at least the last 20 years I have refueled my vehicles with the engine running. All vehicles with fuel injection. It has never resulted in any of the vehicles giving a "check engine" light which I understand can be common if the gas cap is left off when the engine is on. My question is.....am I doing any harm to this direct-injection engine by refueling with the engine on? I haven't had a warning light yet(11,000 miles). And does the SS come without a fuelcap so that it can be quickly refueled in competition situations? And if that's not why.....why is there no fuelcap? Thank you for your responses to the questions.

Why are you leaving the engine running? What benefit do you see?

Never occurred to me to leave the engine running while fueling. Chances are that nothing is going to happen, but it just seems that shutting it off removes one more factor.

I would never do this because someone could jump into the car and drive away with it. How could you explain that to the insurance company ?

Gas tank is under pressure while running, adding the gas pump nozzle at the station may or may not affect it. Up to you.

Seems like a waste to me. I have wanted to do this when it's cold before but I felt bad cause the people around me have to smell my unburned fuel coming from the high flow cats haha.

My wife had a Lincoln mkz...it did not have a fuel cap. Same as the Camaro. I've left the vehicle running while refueling for years. Never had a problem, not sure why I do that. Only issue I have ever had was with turbo cars, surging, so I turned those off.

I also have a MKX with no cap and have left the engine running when very hot out and my wife is in the car. I once had a gas station clerk call out to me over the speaker to turn my car off when we were in Maryland. It may be a law up there but anyway supposed to be a fire hazard.

Recently watched a video from Vehicle Virgins and he explains the chances of your gas catching fire is basically 1 in a billion when you refuel with the car on.
Anyway as best practice it's always good to switch it off. Also, it's fun to have the entire gas station hear the V8 rumble when you start the car after a refuel. |
