Help me rebuild ......... what to buy ... what to re-use... etc.
Ok, so some of you have followed my situation.
For those who have not, I had an oil pressure drop. Had a sensor error code so changed the sensor and put a Mechanical gauge on it too. No dice, still low oil pressure. Did an oil change first to completely rule out a clogged up oil filter. No dice, still low pressure. Cut the oil filter open and spread the paper filter and found these metal shavings pictured below. Thought maybe it was the oil pump chewing it's self apart. Either way the next step was to remove the pump. Got the pump off and saw that it was scraped up a bit but still was in fine shape to pump oil. So I had to dig deeper to see where my oil was going. Well, I got the heads off and the cam and lifter out and discovered two lifters pitted and the lobes smashed. (pics below) Still have to pull the engine to confirm or at least check to see if there was any damage to the rotating assembly in any way. No way to be sure where the chain of events started. And at this point where it stopped in the engine. But with 90k miles on the engine and it broken down this far I know where it will end. NEW BUILD. Bottom up. I'll need new springs, lifters and a cam. Maybe some new valves while I'm there. Might go ahead and port the heads with Bo White. But this is where you guys come in. Advice, tips, thoughts, etc........ Ideally I'd like to get this done for 5k or less. But I want to build it better than it was before so that is unrealistic. Especially having to buy the new valvetrain parts. I could go to a salvage yard for a short block.... Anyway ......... I could not find any place that showed evidence of the kind of oil pressure loss that I had. Rotating assembly looks fine but I'm not sure what to look for unless I disassemble it. Anyway, here are some pics from today. Keep in mind the engine had 95k miles on it. Only three of the main cap bearings came up not blurry. All 5 bearings came up on the block. Few pics of what the typical wear seems to be on all of it. I'm still not sure I found where the oil pressure was lost. What say you guys? Last edited by PQ; 08-18-2013 at 12:33 AM. |

LS7 lifters Melling high volume pump Ran Mobile 1 - 5/30 L99 conversion by Vengeance Racing Magnacharger TVS2300 I believe I over reved it a few times by accident. FTR, I believe I'll find another problem in the crank case. If not, I buy a cam and lifters and take the gamble. Might get another 90 k miles out of it. Even grenading it I'd be out nothing as having to build it all anyway. I'd only possibly be without a block for a core trade. THOUGHTS ON ALL!!! |

PQ, did you ever consider running a different type of oil with a higher zinc content? I don't know how much running mobil 1 with a blower AND cam went into the damage that occurred in your valvetrain, but that could have been a factor.

Well could I use the same cam (new but same specs of course), pushrods and rest of my valve train with this engine if I have it decompressed a bit? And what boost and power is it rated at?

I don't have that block but when livernois did my cam/heads and Maggie I had them raise the compression a little ,,its at 10.8 .1.... I have a l99 when they dynoed it with my 22's on the car it made 586 to the rear wheels !!! and that's with a 3.6 pulley !

What were the specs of the cam you already have? What compression are you looking to run? HP goals? Feel free to overload me with information, the more I have the better I can point you in the right direction! -Chris
