Numbers of V8 versus V6
My wife and I were just down in Fontana (Calif) the last weekend for the
NASCAR race. We saw maybe 30 or so 5th Gen Camaros on the streets. The majority (98%) were all V6s. We visited a large GM car dealer. They had maybe 100 Camaros on their lot. Only 2 were V8s (one was a ZL1). All the rest were V6s. I was flabbergasted. So... just out of curiosity... how many V8s versus V6s do we have here????

why would you be flabbergasted? unless you like to go to a track, there really isn't anywhere you can legally take advantage of the extra HP. some people like the sound, and the "mine's bigger than yours" thing, but the majority of people (who aren't into the track) aren't going to pony up an extra 10k, or buy a 2010 instead of a new one just for sound or ego.
and this board attracts enthusiasts, so I'm willing to be it will be at least 50/50 or slightly more V8's |

I bought a v6 for a couple reasons. But the v6 is the hot seller because anyone can come in and pay 24k (price of a fully loaded smaller car) and drive off in a sexy camaro. So people think hmm ford fusion, or camaro? CAMARO wins 9/10 with the 1 being the family with 3 kids lol

it's not even that, it's more the V8 is a track car. there's nowhere I drive where I'm going to get passed by a car because it has more HP. not in my camaro, despite being a V6. being able to get to 60mph in 1 less second isn't going to be of any use. neither is the higher top speed. just too many cars, too many lights, and too many cops to make it possible to take advantage of a V8 in most places.

Actually... there's really isn't anywhere you can legally take advantage of the V6 HP. I mean, where can you legally do 100+ mph other than at a track?

Simple Supply and demand there are more v6 produced than v8s...FACT!
Why somone purchased a v6 or v8 is ....PERSONAL PREFRENCE Lets not start another v6 vs v8 thread, we have been going strong for a while without one

the V6 helps with everyday driving. things like merging, getting on the freeway, passing etc. doing those things can be challenging in 4 cylinder cars running 130-150HP. that extra acceleration a V6 has over an inline 4 can be put to use. you can't really say the same with the extra power of the V8. but you are correct in that the line is starting to blur. with some 4's getting up to and over 200hp (and that's without turbo's) the advantages of the 6 are becoming diminished. its why in cars that come in a I4 and a V6 the I4 outsells the V6 10:1 |
