Shoes like the Puma speed cat and future cat have very think sole so you can feel the pedal better and they are lighter. It is the opposite of a cowboy boot and a standerd sneaker would fall in the middle for feel and feedback. The Pumas can be found for $50-$80 which is pretty good.
Actual race shoes have fire retardant insulation, these less expensive shoes do not.

If you are talking DD shoes, reebok zigtek lite are good. They are very light and comfortable shoe. the entire shoe is pretty much mesh so extremely breatheable.
BUT....... I also drive barefoot and I prefer it over wearing a shoe.

Maybe not as durable - but at least you can recycle!

For autocross, even though it's probably not legal, I've been known to drive barefoot now and then. Much better feedback through the pedals.

If you enjoy driving barefoot, or simply want maximum input from the pedals, try a Minimalist running Shoe.
Merrill makes several, and all your toes are in the same compartment, like a standard shoe, but the sole is more flexible and very thin, so you get a better feel. Vibram makes the 5 Finger design, which is the best thing next to being barefoot. None of these shoes offer flame resistance though.

However, when it comes to flame resistance, what is the point of getting flame resistant shoes, but not also wearing a flame resistant suit?

This is one of my favorite shoes, Onitsuka Tiger Mexico 66.
These are essentially track shoes, so they're extremely lightweight. Very flat and not much support, but pretty comfortable in the vehicle. I've worn Mexico 66's for a few years now.

Roshe Runs are maybe the most comfortable who I've ever owned. Those or the lunarlites, but nike doesnt make them any more. If your looking for a really comfortable sneaker that is also an excellent shoe for heel toeing, then give the nike Roshe Runs a try. http://tenisufki.eu/image/ficzer/201...ing-2012-1.jpg
Or maybe if you can find them a pair of Air Jordan 14s, they were designed for driving. http://www.google.com/search?q=roshe...n+14s&tbm=isch

A good Wrestling shoe would also be pretty good I think.

Old school simpsons, super comfy, and unlike thin soled non driving shoes, the bottom are super soft rubber and won't slide around when heel/toeing
