We had a good group make the trip to Mobile, AL to vist Battleship Memorial Park

The USS Alabama is a South Dakota-class battleship that was commissioned in 1942 and saw action in the Atlantic and Pacific theaters. She was decommissioned in 1947.

744 B-52 Stratofortress bomobers were built between 1952 and 1962. Today nearly 90 are still in active Service with the USAF. The B-52H can carry up to 70,000 lbs of bombs. In 2012, it was announced that the USAF engineering studies suggest that the life span of the B-52 could extend past 2040.

The Camaro ZL1, and behind it is some crappy plane, just kidding. Lockheed A-12, the single seat precusor to the famous SR-71 Blackbird.

Outstanding...

I was one of the guys who put that B52 on display there. Haven't been back since, but really need to.

I bet that was a sight to see, getting it into place. I was actually wondering about that. Did ya'll take it apart, like take the wings off or something for transport? Was it brought in by water?

I know they brought the Submarine in on a Barge, Did they do the same for the B52?

Flew from the Boneyard in Tuscon AZ landing gear down all the way to Brookly Field. We took all the parts off of it, drained all fluids and pulled the explosives from ejection seats and then towed it off the end of the runway onto a barge and floated it across.

It was Mardi Gras time in Mobile (I believe 1985) when all this happened. That was the very last D model B52 to ever fly.

I'll have to dig up some old pics and scan them.

That is Great to hear that it made a flight to its final resting place. I use to watch them fly over all the time in Northern NY when they were stationed out of Griffis AFB! I would love to see the Pictures! If the Museum doesn't have them I sure they would also like them.

I had no idea they had an A-12 there. Last time I saw an SR-71 fly was 1994

Never thought about that. When I visit I'll bring them on a memory stick.

I parked my car right under the tip tank for some pictures. something we could never do on an Air Force flight line

They flew the plane 4 or 5 times around Tucson before going to Mobile. The fog rolled in to AL so it was unsafe to land. There were pretty strict requirements for visibility on this flight. We met each morning in the Captains office on the Battleship and found out whether the flight was going to happen or not. For a full week they said said no, so we had no work to do. Mardi Gras kept us busy.

Not a bad gig at Mardi Gras time. In 84 i was out a Ft Huachuca and we did a few Field problems from Tucson to Ft Huachuca and a couple of time we set up in the Bone yard and had the run of the place. As long as you stayed on the roads. A young troupe of mind found out after driving through a Cactus patch what is was like to bust down 10 tires from a 2 &1/2 ton truck Deuce and a half full of punctures. One of the most memorable experiences of my life. They would not let us bring cameras though
