Yea but when u have a 4 wheel drive or all wheel drive, the transfer case takes a lot of beating too. I had a 1991 Syclone and was freaking awesome. It only had 285 hp but with all wheel drive. I would beat up on all kind of cars. Vettes, 5.0 etc. This is going to be a long wait for sure though. Maybe someone I know will get their M6 first and let me drive it.

The difference in release dates between Ford and GM could be as simple as corporate culture - risk aversion when it comes to initial quality perception of how the transmission works and long term reliability as it relates to brand equity.

Ford may have determined that Ecoboost buyers are more akin to "early adopters", avoiding the traditional V8 truck, and are, therefore, more forgiving of initial issues with the new transmission. GM may have determined that $70,000+ Camaro buyers would not be so forgiving.

As someone who recently bought a Honda with the 9-speed ZF, I can see how damaging it can be to the reputation of a brand when all the kinks haven't been worked out before it's brought to market. We bought ours July 2016; and the transmission is mostly fine...and I may be a bit picky about its behavior just because of all the bad press that tranny got in its first year since introduced summer 2015. I believe there have been at least 3 software updates since its initial release.

Interesting how GM has demo videos of the 10AT, but Ford doesn't. Looks like GM has wide open throttle, manual shift mode down well for track demonstrations in an off road environment. All they have left to do since those demo videos that got everyone excited came out is the auto shift mapping for all throttle positions vs. load vs. speed vs. emissions vs. shift quality in all acceleration and deceleration scenarios that a test engineer can come up with... Hope those Ford engineers won't miss their families much... The GM engineers might actually get to work only 10 hour days.

What Ive found interesting is that ford spent 1.4 bil in retooling their transmission factory for the a9 and a10 while GM spent less than 400 mil. Could this be a signal for a slower rollout or simply they didn't need as much retooling?

That is because Ford spent their own money, GM spent ours
Only 400 mil out of their pocket.

it is a large disparity for sure, but perhaps GM's factory was in better condition to handle the A10, and maybe Ford needed to upgrade their factory anyway for other reasons...who knows - too many unknowns to make any sort of guess really.

My concern with the A10 is that if this delay is because of some sort of design flaw causing reliability issues, are they too far down the rabbit hole to back out even if they know they can't really fix the issue? I mean If this is the case, and I were the decision maker, I'd probably look at long term effects of moving forward with a bad design, but you never know, nearly all of these decision makers (c-suits) make hundreds of millions of dollars based on short-term performance goals and know that even if they get fired from this "bad decision" they walk with 10's or 100's of millions.

Anyway, I think it will be fine, the waiting sucks for sure, but even if the A10 were available now, for many of us 4 season citizens, not much point in taking delivery in the winter.

All of this makes me want to pick up a 1LE and sit back with my popcorn for a few years to see where the ZL1/10sp chips fall....

I think the 10sp *looks* like a great option, but the lack of initial production makes me wonder what the engineers have found that isn't working as intended. The 9sp ZF transmission that has been giving Honda/Acura fits is a perfect example, I know that one of the major magazine has had their long term Honda Pilot in for a new transmission already.

Yup, if the ZL1 has crazy delays (and I want an M6/Coupe), I've wondered if I would just get a 1LE and call it a day.

2017 ZL1 built

I was called by my dealership this morning and told the 2017 ZL1 that I ordered has a VIN # and was built last week. No indications as to the expected delivery date at this point.

Thank you also for the info. Sounds like it'll be just in time for the track season.
