CAI Is it bad for your engine's life ?
I just wandered in another forum reading about how bad CAI is .Wondered if it's true ,And I think everyone out there who has CAI also want to know about this .Please clarify this .

I know CAI systems and they are bad news! Most filter little more from the incoming air than smalls stones and birds. The lesser restriction of air flow will allow more dirt into your engine .They will shorten your engine life. As Hildy mentioned--you can prove that to yourself by scientific oil analysis, worn engine parts and premature oil consumption. Please, just stay away from them--in all vehicles. Now that is not to say that if you can find a way to direct cooler "DRY" air into a vehicles intake, then go for it. But do not change your stock air filter for a K&N or other aftermarket washable/re-oil type filter---they are complete garbage. The HP increase numbers these companies post and claim makes steam erupt from my ears---it's total 100% crap!" Last edited by Belam; 05-10-2013 at 03:31 PM. |

The Stig speaks the truth.....but thats why the internet is such a double edged sword. Lots of great info, but so much misinformation and opinons mixed in it is confusing. Also, you have the unscruplous (very few) that will post anything just to try and benefit what they want to sell you.

they aren't any worse for the motor that the factory ones..
though for "most" vehicles they add little more than noise.. Most OEM motors will not see any real gains from them, and those that do only see them in the high RPM band which is mostly useless for street driving. now add a cam, heads, exhaust from the headers to the tail pipes, or any type of FI and yeah they offer some gains.

I had some of the same concerns about CAI kits. I settled for a kit with the Donaldson Powercore Dry filter which actually filters better than your stock filter, yet with more airflow. I also run flat K&N filters in my other cars which do not filter as well, but I'm not concerned. recently had gaskets replaced on my minivan at 135k, which runs a flat K&N filter in ther stock box. Mechanic said he's never seen a cleaner engine with over 100k miles before (Inside) and that I'm good for another 150k. I use synthetic oil and change it every 3k. So bottom line, my experience with oiled cotton filters has been good, and if you're still nervous, by any cold ait kit you want and get the Donaldson Powercore filter as a replacement for the cone media that comes in the CAI kit. Donaldson makes filters for numerous industrial applications, and they know what they're doing.
