Throttle Control vs Traction Control
Could an aftermarket throttle controller affect traction control?
I know my Traction Control is on, but my tires come loose when I take off in a "Spirited" way. When I give it just a little more than a normal take off acceleration, I'm fishtailing. Is there a place that I can set the traction control to a percentage? I know there is a "Slip Target" in Launch Control, but does this percentage also come into play with acceleration when not using launch control? My thoughts about Traction Control must be incorrect. I thought that "Traction Control" meant that whenever I took off, The acceleration would be backed off to insure the wheel spin would not occur. Thanks in advance! Brett.....

The throttle goes from 0% to 100% With the throttle ehnancer, 50% is the new 100% for example So leaving a light and pressing 40% of the throttle, the ECM sees 90%, therefore thinks almost full power needs to be applied. This throttle controllers are fun but in no way they are making the car faster, its just a placebo effect. They're not really useful in a competitive environment either because you loose control and sensitivity of the throttle. Unless its intended. Our cars have torque limiters, to not loose traction but they are a for excess torque. Traction control needs to read from the wheel speed sensors and until it kicks on you've already lost traction. The Torque limiter mitigates the burnout, so it isn't massive but you will still fishtail. This is a graph of what I just said. |

I do find the traction control interesting in these cars. When I first got my 1LE it had the factory 3Rs on them and even with TC enabled I'd get a lot of fishtailing when romping on it and rotation before it seemed to kick in. I swapped to Michelin P4Ss fairly quickly and now with exactly the same conditions the TC does its job pretty well judging from how often it blinks its light at me. Guessing there's only so much it can do with what it's working with, might be the same case with you.

You guys are awesome! I really am grateful for the information. Kamero6, The explanation about the throttle controller makes sense. Even tho, like you say it's a placebo affect, the TC I purchased really livens up the driving, for sure. It just seems more like the way the accelerator pedal should be while driving. My tires are Eagle F1 Supercar 3 TPC Spec 1488. The Traction rating is AA. Funny thing is, the date code is 0523. But I took delivery in March of 2023. How can that be? How can the tires be made two months after I bought it?!
So the T/C light should be flashing on when it slips the traction? I will go back to factory Throttle control and assess. Blackrat, I am gonna do some research on the tires you mention in your post. I found this tire on the Chevrolet site. It is not a ZR20 tho; Thanks again! Very informative! Brett....

Try different PTM modes if you need to rely on traction control. In 'wet' you probably won't be fishtailing.

As mentioned above, traction control works to reduce overall tire slip, whereas stability control is aimed at reducing the chances of slideouts where one corner slips but not the others, engaging individual brakes in an attempt to straighten out the car. Quote:
I wouldn't buy this tire, especially at this insanely inflated price. First, this is a racing tire, if you really want that, consider the Goodyear Supercar 3R from the ZL1 1LE or the Michelin Cup 2, but none of these tires are for the street, they require serious heat to be put into them before they start to grip well, and you will likely be unable to do that on the street, so you'd be compromising for nothing. Second, if you want good street tires that have excellent dry and wet grip as well as being quiet and softer than stock ride, consider the Michelin Pilot Sport 4S or the Continental ExtremeContact Sport 02, these will be great 3-season performers. For maximum straight line traction, you may want to entertain the idea of streetable drag radials such as the Nitto NT555RII (note this is NOT their G2 tire).

Thank you arpad_m for the great corrected info! I have been building and rebuilding parts of cars for years, but I mainly have stayed away from the newer "computerized" cars and it shows, haha. It is SO nice to be able to get on a site like this that has people like you helping people like me. My "Bucket List Bad-Ass" sleeps in my garage 90% of the time, so I would actually consider acquiring some Drag Radials just so I can throw them on an extra pair of identical (or adequate comparable) wheels just so I can experience the true capabilities of this truly awesome project. Too bad I couldn't make them interchangeable with my 69!
Thanks again for the support and valuable knowledge. Brett

You truly have a badass car in your garage, do try to drive it more, though. I find even mundane, grandma style driving very enjoyable in mine. Took a few tweaks, but now the car is nearly perfect. As to tires, Nitto advertises a G2 front and RII rear combo on their site, but I haven't seen a lot of positivity about the G2, so even if it isn't on the driven axle, I'm not sure how well it would perform in turns... I have the PS4S and once my set wears out, I think i'll buy it again.

OP the problem only gets much worse as power level increase, the engineers did an incredible job tuning our performance driving modes. From stock to nearly 1000hp the “Track - Wet,Dry,Race” are the only modes I’ll drive in. Rain or shine, track or street, they are cheat codes!
Always drive with full awareness and intention, even with the most strict Traction Control a car can do unexpected things. Before I put her away for winter (and more power) at 700whp I was rolling at 80mph with the factory Eagle 3R in the default street setup. Assuming it was alright to roll in hard at that speed I went completely sideways and fortunately was able to recover using up two lanes next to me. It was 50 degrees, even though the tires were warm the road was way too cold!!! |

With the ZL1, the engineers designed the system to allow the tires to spin as long as the car is pointed forward which means you have to rely on your foot to roll in the power and not overwhelm the tires. Once it starts to yaw the TC and stability control systems kick in.
During launch control you can pick a slip speed and it will compensate to keep the slippage within the target range.

Okay guys, I get it now. With the App below, I see that when I choose the "ULT" at level 5, and on cold roads, it is just not good. Good thing I live in Texas, where the roads will be getting warm/Hot soon. I will try the settings below of "A/S" (Anti-Slip) & "LNC" (Launch) to see how they compare to "Ultimate" & "Ultimate9" which I'm learning are not appropriate for my particular setup.
Thanks guys! Brett....
