Why does the A/C always go out when its hot outside?

The A/C worked last week. 2 days ago it didn't so I check and saw the compressor wasn't spinning. Today it is working normally.

Low on refrigerant or is the compressor dying?

As the air temperature goes up it makes the A/C work harder, if the system is low on freon the compressor won't kick on. On a Cooler day the A/C may work but it probably has a freon leak. You might get buy for a while just adding freon but it depends if it is a slow leak or a faster leak.
