Do I need a new tune??

Hey all,

Hopefully this is an easy question to answer, and I'm pretty sure I know what the answer is going to be but just need confirmation.

My car is tuned for 93 octane and I just got stationed in Socal and all I find is 91. Do I need to get a retune for the lower octane? How bad is it running on 91 octane when I'm tuned for 93?

Thanks,

Higher octane tunes usually mean more timing. Octane usually decreases as elevation increases (since the air is less dense). Depending on your new elevation and assuming your car is N/A, there might be nominal difference.
However, as the car detects Knock Retard (KR), it will interpolate between the High Octane (HO) Spark table and the Low Octane (LO) Spark table. Once the KR hits some magic number, the car will just shift to the LO table to protect the engine. It will stay there until the fuse pull trick that forces the reset. I'm assuming that your tuner left the LO table with less aggressive timing than the HO one.

So, should you get it re-tuned? Probably so, but see how it behaves first.

Its probably not worth it to waste money on another tune. Its not like the 93 will hurt anything, your ecu will just use a lower octane fuel mapping like granatl stated.

I would suggest getting a tune for 91 octane.

Absolutely it is only 55.00 for you since I just tuned your car.

Anytime you have lower octane than your car is anticipating you need to re-tune.

The risk/reward ratio just isn't there. Be safe, be smart, re-tune.
