SS 1LE vs BMW M2, in new Road & Track...
Got my new R&T yesterday. On the cover a red BMW M-2 comp and a red SS 1LE.
Interesting article with a lot of personal opinion, as both C&D and R&T love the BMW M series, always have. Considering the price difference as well as the insane difference in maintenance costs...by my thinking the SS is the clear winner. Worth picking up and reading. May even be online. |

I've owned a gaggle of Beemers. In addition to high maintenance costs they all had squeaking interior plastic except the 1976 2002 I bought new. I never did get the front end wobble out of my 320I. My later models all squeaked. My SS Vert is remarkably tight. I'll stick with the General.

Not me, the best late model Beemer I had was an M-Coupe. It squeaked like the rest of them but what a little monster. Fast and a great handler.

I just got out of my 2016 M3 and it was the worst creak box I have ever had.
All 4 door seals would squeek and creak going over a speed bump, driveway, etc. It was downright embarrassing. 1st repair attempt was to spray some lube on it, worked for a total of 1.5 days. 2nd repair attempt, they replaced every seal in all 4 doors, that fix lasted about 1 week. 3rd repair attempt, they applied 3M tape on all seals, that finally solved it for most of the time. Other than the awful door seal creaks, I also had a mysterious sound that came from the front vents when the car was at freeway speeds. Worst shit box interior (noise wise) out of any car I ever had.

Those magazines never give proper regard for cost of ownership, IMHO, when they do these comparisons. Usually they get into fuel economy, but purchase price (with options you would really want), insurance, and maintenance costs are often big differences |

My Mom had a red Bavaria for five years. Forget what year, probably a 72-74. It was solid and fast. The new ones do nothing for me. No more identity to them, like in the past. |

My first car was a '77 BMW 530i w/150K miles. Hand me down from my Dad. That car was awesome and it hauled pretty good. Loved it. 1st and last Beemer I ever had.
My Dad (now 82), drives a '15 M235i. He got it super low mi used. He traded in his '11 GTI on it. He's only liked Euro cars with the exception of a 1st gen Taurus SHO he owned and didn't keep long. |

I like BMWs, I have a 135i with most of an M suspensions swap (basically a 1M) along with a few other mods... it's a nice car and it's a lot of fun to drive. However compared to my Camaro, I wouldn't call it a serious sports car... I also wouldn't pay however much BMW wanted for a new one (the M2 comp is like $20k more than the 1LE).
I've driven an M4, although briefly and not hard, and I though it was pretty good. However, it's not as exciting or raw as the Camaro... and it's not like the Camaro is unrefined, I just think the combination of the alpha platform with the LT4 is awesome for this sort of car. It has everything, even more impressive that you can get a fully loaded one for under $50k!
