Killing time waiting on more news, sooo... Alternates to ZL1 for me thread

Hey folks,

I'm 90% certain I'm getting a ZL1 early next year unless insane ADMs slow me down. I DD and track my cars when possible. (Not currently tracking the Wrangler! )

Mostly just for fun, when my heart is set on a car (or anything), I always try to see if I can convince myself of another. So, cars I've been researching and cross-shopping with the ZL1 are:

1. Cayman GT4 - Yes, they themselves are going for over six figures used, but price aside, it would be a fun option.

2. 2017 GT350 - Gets Track Pack standard and prices have come back to earth.

3. Alfa Romeo 4C - Looks better than most, both inside and out, and "fun factor" - but also questionable reliability and subpar track performance in this group.

4. Stingray Z51 - Nothing bad to say about it, but I like that the Camaro has a backseat for my kid.

5. Focus RS - Fun, Rally-inspired, but also subpar track performance in this group

6. BMW M2 - Tossable, fun, mini M.

Your thoughts... Hey, it's something to do while we wait on more info.

Cheers,
N

My 2 cents on a few of your choices:

Cayman GT4 - great car but in a different league, price-wise and IMO at those prices it's not worth it. It's a rarity issue, I get it; but like the insane ADM for GT350Rs, I think it's a poor value.

2017 GT350 - Awesome if you can get it at MSRP. The ZL1 will be faster but that high winding Voodoo motor is unlike anything in any other American car. A future legend.

Focus RS - At the end of the day it's a $40K Focus. If you're really into hot hatches it's the one to get but I have a hard time getting excited about it.

BMW M2 - From everything I've read this is the spiritual successor to the older M3s. Terrific car. Wait times are very long though -- as in order now, get your car in 18 months.

Driven all but Focus and M2.

Cayman - Price is not supported by performance. Many cars can outperform this car for far less money....BUT....if you take money out of the equation....extremely well balanced, easy to drive fast and simply my favorite on this list.

GT350 - Too nose heavy for my liking but lots of power. Brakes are adequate, not great. Handling is a little soft for my liking BUT I like a very stiff car so this is just my opinion. I still think they need more tire but many think otherwise. Solid alternative.

Alfa - Very fun to drive on twisty track but just not enough power for long straights.

Vette - Its a vette. You know what you are getting here. The Z51 is my favorite package (have not drive GS) as I believe it provides great value.

Focus - Again, have not driven and really don't care to.
Beemer - Again, no interest in driving this one either.

I'm just going to keep until GM decides to at the very least give us something to chew on. I don't think they are working on anything else at this point, just waiting for some special date in August to finally give us something.

BTW, can someone explain to me the difference between the 718 Cayman and the Cayman...

Don't forget the 2017 Grand Sport. Wide Body with Z06 suspension bits and an NA engine. Should be about $75,000 fully loaded with Z07 package. That assumes about a $6k discount which is readily available already. That or the ZL1 seem to be my favorite choices but all depend on what motor we get in the Z28.

Hellcat new or used. Sublime or Plum Crazy.

Not a big fan of the 350R. It's nice and has great styling but there have never been Fords in my garage. It's a house rule. Lol

Too expensive
1. Cayman GT4 - Yes, they themselves are going for over six figures used, but price aside, it would be a fun option.

You could buy a Corvette for this money 2. 2017 GT350 - Gets Track Pack standard and prices have come back to earth.

It will break. 3. Alfa Romeo 4C - Looks better than most, both inside and out, and "fun factor" - but also questionable reliability and subpar track performance in this group.

Good choice. 4. Stingray Z51 - Nothing bad to say about it, but I like that the Camaro has a backseat for my kid.

Another good choice if you have snow on the ground in the winter 5. Focus RS - Fun, Rally-inspired, but also subpar track performance in this group

Meh...6. BMW M2 - Tossable, fun, mini M.

Good list, but the M4 might be a more direct comparison over the M2. That's what I have cross shopped along with used 911s.

Audi TT-RS
Corvette (all trims)
BMW M2

I don't love any cars out right now. I'm really hoping the ZL1 lives up to expectations as it's the only one I'm really interested in. If it somehow disappoints, I don't know what I'd get.

Am I the only one going between a ZL1 and Z06? I wouldn't consider a Z51 between those two choices. We can't argue price yet, as one is still unknown.

My current (5th Gen) ZL1 & Z/28, Current GT350 (w/ Track Pack), C6 Vette (GS, Z51) just to name a few. All of these can be had under $75K (or close to it) and still gives you $25K (minimum) to invest in mod's, trailer, driver training, etc.

If your considering the Alfa 4c, consider the Giulia QV..Twin turbo Ferrari designed V6 with 503 hp. Also comes with a manual which the 4c only has tap shift.
The 4c was on my hit list before I bought my ZL1, but when I found out it was tap shift only that crossed it right off.

This guy does a great review subtitles in english. A must watch.

As far as reliability, a broken Alfa has been poorly, or improperly maintained. Maintained correctly they are as reliable as anything out there.
I have always owned at least one and never have suffered a breakdown in 30 years of drivng them. Especially with the older cars where this undeserved rep came from, you have to know how maintain them.

Are they a bit quirky yes but once you know what they need to stay happy you will a hard time finding a car more rewarding to drive. Treat it like a disposable toyota, your going to have issues.
