Anyone upgrade to a ZL1 from an SS? Worth it?
I have my appointment scheduled to go heads/cam + FBO in my SS but I just got an insane offer on my car. $7k over what I paid for it 5 months ago after almost 5k miles. I feel like I'd be stupid not to take that.
I'm thinking about taking the heads/cam money + SS equity + $7k and putting it into a ZL1 but I'm not sure if it's really that much of an upgrade? Anyone made this switch? I'd be coming from a 2019 1SS A10 and would probably try to find a lightly modified ZL1 off the forums here. There's only two ZL1's at dealers near me and I couldn't convince either of them to let me take it out to see what they're all about. |

It’s well worth it. I went from a 2016 2ss to a 17 ZL1 and just dumped a ton of money on the ZL1. Stock for stock it is a night and day difference in appearance, ride quality, hands long, power etc. prices on them have also sky rocked like the ss and people are asking crazy numbers. I bought mine a few months ago for 47k and it books now for 56k and that’s for stock. Mine was tuned and had big gulp along with 1lE wing. There are a few out there for about 52-55k.

For the money its hard to beat. Its the entire package that makes it worthwhile. Having both right now at the same time definitely lets you really see all the small and fine details.

It is an easy decision. If you have the means financially the ZL1 is a no brainer over the SS. Period.

I went from a M6 2SS to an A10 ZL1. It was fun at first and I got close to running 10s in it. But after a while I started missing my SS. The ZL1 is an amazing performance car, but it felt heavier (which it is) and driving did not feel as responsive as the SS. The extra power was fun but mostly unusable on the street. I also scraped the splitter early on. I liked the looks at first, but after a while it looked over the top to me.
As I watched the ZL1 resale value plummet I decided to sell. I had the 70K list ZL1 for one year and was very lucky to get $50K out of it. I waited a while after selling the Z. But when the LT1 came out, I ordered One my way. The LT1 will be my last 6th gen Camaro and the one I like the most.

When I hit the gas on my SS around town, I'm going 80mph on side streets in a heartbeat and I think..."holy crap." Love the car but even it feels a bit overkill. A ZL1 would be an absolute waste for me. I also don't want even worse mpg......and spending another $25K for extra weight and power I'd hardly ever be able to use.....no thanks. If I was totally loaded and blowing that cash would not even make a dime sized dent, then why not? Otherwise, no way.

I would do it in a heart beat but I am going to go from my SS to a C8 instead.

Yep sure did back in March 2019! I was going the S/C route in my 2016 2SS and after all the figures it would have been too expensive and not worth the money to upgrade the SS. I found a low mileage used 2017 ZL1 and the rest is history. No regrets so far.

Before I bought my Camaro a few months ago, I went back and forth, over and over again, trying to decide what would I like the most. Would the 2SS be OK, or should I just get the ZL1. I know I wouldn't track either, but just enjoy the ride.
I went with the 2SS. It's a fun car to drive. Lately though, I've been trying to find the right ZL1. I'm so confused. Dammit Chevy. |

You can invest thousands into a 1SS and still just have the value of a 1SS. A ZL1 on the other hand, is amazing.
A ZL1 weighs about 150-200 more pounds than an SS (auto to auto or M6 to M6), but the weight distribution is the same (54/46). So, the extra weight is well distributed and not just in the front of the car. Aside from the LT4, which is much more than "just an LT1 w/ a blower" as some like to say, a ZL1 has many other upgrades for component strength (i.e. Transmission), performance, styling/looks, aero, forged wheels, and create comforts/ amenities compared to a 1SS. Plus, it looks awesome. Prices right now on all cars are crazy/high, so you're probably going to pay more for a lightly used low mileage '20 or '21 ZL1 than I did for mine new (and custom ordered) 2 months ago. Plus, ZL1s are special and rare, and may very well likely be the last big-engined/supercharged Camaro. If you can afford a ZL1, I'd say get one.
