I have my name on a list already. The dealer has told me they are not going to take orders until they have build sheets and price lists. They have no idea when that will happen though.

I don't think it is necessarily a bad idea as long as 1) the money is completely refundable (which it is); 2) you are indeed guaranteed one within a specified time frame that you have agreed on and 3) Have agreed to a certain price you are willing to pay or have been guaranteed a price that is no more than the MSRP.

I will not be able to put a down payment till mid 2009 and if they tell me i have to wait in line a few months behind a few people thats fine with me, I can save even more money and make $1000 dollar payments here and there. I am still paying off my wild australian excursion, then im gonna save for exactly 24 months for the Camaro. I should be able to put down between 20 and 30 K by then.

Same as mine,
this just guaranteed me that I would be able to build my camaro, when they found out how many they would be allocated. I know weve said before" A down payment means nothing, until we know the options!" But I sure do love the feeling of knowing that I am the first in line at a major KC METRO dealer to get my hands on one.

Were either of you guaranteed a certain dollar amount over invoice or MSRP etc for the price?

UNFORTUNATELY I WAS, 2,500 OVER MSRP. I WENT IN THERE JUST BEFORE X -MAS, TO PICK UP A GIFT MY SALESMAN HAD BOUGHT ME, IT IS UP TO 7,500 OVER MSRP. BUT IT STATES RIGHT THERE ON MY RECEIPT THAT JUST 2,500 OVER MSRP, OR I CAN GET IT BACK OR USE IT TOWARD THE PURCHASE OF ANY OTHER VEHICLE.

Don't be one of those guys... I would ask for my money back and find a dealer who is not going to rip you off (there are many out there you just have to look). Tell your “salesman buddy” your going to buy elsewhere. If he laughs at you just state this “Customer for life, not a one time deal”. The average customer purchases 7 + new vehicles in there lifetime and most are from the same dealer. A good dealer realizes this and is willing to do most anything for you in order to keep you coming back…

I was first on my list and I was promised MSRP or below. I would say they have made a customer for life…

If that is the case, then I certainly wouldn't gave given that dealer my $1000 in an interest-free loan. I refuse to pay over MSRP for any car. Like TAG and KILLER said, you can find a dealer that values you as a customer more than a short term monetary gain. Not only will most people continue to buy their 7+ cars in a lifetime with that dealer, but they will recommend others to that dealer if they are treated right. Paying $2,500 over msrp is not being treated right. At the absolute most, you should have agreed to paying MSRP in addition to the $1000 (basically paying $1000 for the right to purchase one fo the first ones).

However, it is not my money.

I understand what you guys are saying, and perhaps I should consider asking for my down back. And looking elsewhere. I just got caught up in the moment, I put that money down before the camaro was ever a sure deal. So I will have to make a call and see what has been done, and how many other people are on the list.

Doing a little bit of asking around sure won't hurt. If you call another dealer and let them know you are currently on a list and have $1000 to secure a Camaro, I am sure they will be happy to negotiate; however, since the release is still undetermined, there are not a lot of dealers that are even willing to take a deposit.

we have a dealer here in Austin that we use... we've bought 5 cars from them in the past... we've already reserved a car through them and wont have to put any money down until the options lists are in the dealer's hands... after that, it will be the standard $500 earnest money and then a waiting game to get the car... we went with a safe bet and chose the top dog coupe fully loaded in black with six speed manual.
