Blown motor! Help.

So I blew my motor tonight and was wondering what could cause to blow a piston out. I only have a cam on my car had it installed about 4 months ago. And was running fine. And tonight I was about to get on it for fun rev up to about 3500rpm to dump the clutch and bam pieces banging the bottom. Any ideas to what could have cause this??

Are you referring to bottom end parts that blew a window out the side of your block or valve train parts that fodded out the engine? Need to identify which parts are making the sounds of marbles in a coffee can that you've illustrated.

Could be alot of things. How long has the cam been in there? Any strange noises before the boom? How hard is the car driven, does it see the rev limiter often? Sometimes doodoo just happens, and its a good reason to build something better

Detonation, running lean, too much spark, valve spring failure, valve failure, bad piston, bad rod, etc etc. Way to many reasons.

also the way he described what he was about to do would also suggest that the motor may have seen some high revs. Looks like a product of firing the cylinder when the piston was in the up stroke.

A tear down may find some clues. Like under the timing cover did the cam gear move? Cam bolt broke? Was PTV checked on the cam install.

I'm doubting detonation. An LS3 is pretty indestructible without a power adder. In modded motor that goes kablooey, I believe in the u touched it theory. What was recently touched? Cam install? I'd wager most likely to do with the cam install.

Single bolt cam? PTV checked? Dowel pin on cam sheared off? Drop a valve? Tons on possibilities. It had to be tuned. To be so far off on the tune to explode an NA motor known for its indestructibility? Doubt it.

what he said and more, running regular oil in a engine with a racing type cam could cause doo-doo but usually not so quick, also lack of upgrading parts when installing the cam, failure to install cam properly, spun bearing making rod break, etc etc.

You need to look to the top end first as usually problems start from the top down, have any mechanical over revs in the past by downshifting? That could have and is most likely to have caused weakened springs/ slightly bent pushrods.... A condition which led me to a new engine via spring breakage months after the over rev with little to no signs until ten miles of very slight noise then TINK...

Buying a crate motor you can find for about $6500 on ebay complete drop in fuel rails, intake, exhaust etc.... Buying customized etc costs more. Good Luck

My bet is you dropped a valve and the piston came up and the rod broke . More than likely you will need a large $$$$$$ dose of cash to remedy the problem.
