But as you know if you are spinning wheels because you lost traction you are going slower. So in this sense, AWD keeps you from going slower from wheel spin but doesn't make you go faster than if you were driving without wheel spin.

So it enhances traction from poor driving conditions or just poor driving.

There is a reason why people in California don't buy many AWD ATS or CTS. Last numbers I saw those were in the snow belt.

An ATS with V6 AWD at 3693lbs ran 0-60 in 5.2 seconds. This is an option I would want in a Camaro, only build it with a 6 speed manual . It gets below zero, with ice and snow where I live and I wouldn't have to park my car for 4-5 months out of the year. Sure I would rather have rear wheel drive but I want to enjoy my car all year round. Every thing has a trade off but with more options like this you can have the best of both worlds IMO.

I think this is the center of the AWD Camaro discussion. Ground clearance isn't as big of an issue as some would make it out to be. We live it 5K feet and drive up to 10K with my wife's AWD Buick Lacrosse, hardly flat landers and with Nokian Hakkapeliitta's it is like a cat. The issue with most people in Winter driving is snowpack/ice not blowing through snow banks. A rear wheel drive sports car can be hard to live with, hell a RWD anything can be hard to live with during the Winter. The ATS offers it and since the Gen 6 and the ATS share underpinnings it would not seem like it would be a great stretch.

I don't see Chevy adding AWD unless forced to do so. More Weight, worse mpg, more maintenance and points of failure. It certainly can enhance traction and improve performance but it does bring some negatives

I can see Ford doing this with their EB4 selling in Europe and other colder parts of the country and world. If the performance gains are significant enough then chevy will counter. I just don't see chevy driving this.

I kinda wish I had gotten AWD on my current car but for the added expense, weight, maintenance, mpg loss and I live in the Southwest, I figured why pay for it but the performance numbers are starting to come in and I do like the edge it provides.

I want a small electric motor in my next camaro LT4 to help get it going, along with AWD.

Must say, the upcoming Ford Focus RS has gotten my attention. AWD, 320+ hp and 3 pedals sounds like a blast.

More appropriate that it goes in a Caddy than a Camaro, though.

I agree. But I work for Fiat and a car like this would be a daily driver. So, waiting for the Dart SRT ....

Unfortunately I think your correct. However wouldn't it be something if Chevy took the lead on this? The negatives that come with AWD are shared with all other AWD vehicles. Buyers that would be shopping an AWD Camaro are not going to be seriously cross shopping it against a RWD Mustang or Challenger. It will be cross shopped against other AWD vehicles whether it be an SUV or some other AWD car. The difference is, that the Camaro could now be a part of a buying decision that it cant be without AWD. Considering the amount of car buyers that deal with 4 season driving conditions, it would open the car up to a much larger potential audience. Sports cars are for most buyers, a second or third car, but what if as a buyer you can get the looks, reputation, performance in car a that you can actually justify to own as primary transportation? Ford nor Dodge offer it, GM by using the ATS AWD drivetrain could offer it more easily and more cost effectively than could the competition (I am assuming that obviously). It would appear that it is a great opportunity to blow the top of the American sports car market.

Yes the $150k Nismo GTR beat the Z06 on Willow Springs. For $50k more in the Nissan i expect it to slay dragons and split the atom. I mean really $50k more to run a second faster on the track. The GTR is still a good bang for the buck but really its hard to justify half a Z06 more for that kind of improvement. What's interesting is Randy said it was a handful on that track but loved it on Road Atlanta.

I think it would be a wicked option on Camaro, at least in V6 form. The RS looks enticing too, for quick trips full of fun. I may be old or something. I'm tired of manually shifting and prefer paddles all day.

I'm all for AWD if it'll cut down on the guys who whine all winter about "having" to put their cars away. I've been more than pleased with how my '10 SS has done in the winter. My commuter for more than 10 years was a 2wd Durango with a 360 and open differential. Snowy mornings were a one-legged @ss kicking contest but I never missed a day of work though I was late a few times. If we do see AWD on the Gen6 I tend to agree that it'll be on the V6s and more pedestrian than performance.
