On 20 x 8.5 wheels, you could run 255/45-20 tires, but no wider. With that size, you might need to tweak your inflation pressures a little in order to match the load capacity of your OE tires at their OE-recommended pressure. You might be able to run 245/45-20's all around - if they're XL tires - with an inflation pressure adjustment for the rears only. Norm

9" wheels, then.
I'd still go with 255/45-20's as a first choice. 245/45-20's are still do-able but will be slightly stretched (9" is the max width for that size). 265/40-20's could work on 9" wide wheels if you don't mind running slightly shorter than stock tires. I'll note that 9" is the minimum width here (like it is for 275/40's as well), so they'll be slightly pinched/bulged, but not as bad as the 275/40's on 8.5" wheels that you have now. Norm

I don't think a staggered set up is going to be an issue for the OP or have handling consequences on a DD. It doesn't sound like he looking to take it to the track. 1LEs, ZL1s and ZL1/1LEs all have staggered set up from the factory and all handle extremely well so it's not like a car with a staggered set up can't handle. If he wants to go square for budget and or rotations, that's a different story.

I moved to 20/10 and run 285/35 MPS4S all the way around. Car handles great, and is very neutral in cornering.

Squared stance here - 20x9 with 275/40/20 on all four corners. Great for rotation purposes, and it take a lot of the understeer bias out of the car.

I'm running staggered. 305 rear and 275 fronts.
Another thing to keep in mind is changing from factory will also change the handling of the car. Specifically you could put your car into a overly harsh understeer or oversteer condition without realizing it. I recommend asking JP and go from his vast knowledge of our cars.
