5.38 to 4.56 gears ??

I know this is mainly a 5th gen sight but there is lots of very good info on here. I have a 67 camaro drag car w/5.38's and considering going to 4.56's so I can do some 1/4 mile runs. My question is how much will it hurt my 1/8 mile times switching gears? The car runs 5.78 @ 109 and weighs 2400 lbs w/out driver.
Any help is greatly appreciated.

You are definately limited to 1/8 mile. List more details on the car....running a glide I assume? What converter? Engine? What are you launching at? You may slow slightly in the 1/8th, but what class(es) do you run? If not heads-up, then any index or bracket I would not be concerned. I like to do the chasing, but playing the stripe works even if being chased. If the car is consistant then it's all in your dial and the driver mod.

I would do it if you plan to run some 1/4 mile tracks.

Our "Spring Fling 20's" we put on each year is 1000' just so the 1/8th mile guys can still run w/out gear changes.

Glide, 5500 converter, 388cu launching 3800 now previous owner was 4200. I've only run it once and was trying to ease up on it. I'm gonna run super pro and pro. I can make it 1000 feet and then she runs out of rpm at about 8000.

Do it and see. You may go quicker as very few engines make power at 8000 rpm. I've got a 2300 pound vega with 30" tall tires. 388 with afr heads. I run 4.56's in the 8th and 4.10's in the 1/4. Get our best ET's shifting at 6400.

Agree w/willhe.

I would stick with the 5500 stall, and shift just past peak power curve. Do the higher gears.

31" shifting at 6800
I since found that it was not a full 660'

I've got a local shop who has an engine dyno and I'm thinking about pulling the engine out and dynoing it so I know were it makes power. Dyno and tuning for around $300 doesn't sound to bad I to me.

I sure don't need any gears in the steiger right now, maybe a propeller

My pinion seal started leaking so its begging me to tear into it and just swap the gears, just wish it was a 9" instead of a dana 60 so I could switch back easy if it doesn't work.

Well 5.7's work out to what in the 1/4, 8.8 - 9.0?

I would think 4.56 could work, your car is pretty light.

The track is your dyno, just run it and try different shift points, and on some other runs try leaving higher put up the 2 step.

The classes you mention are index classes right, so do you have to run a 9.0 or 9.5 or can you have a dial-in?

It converts to 9.15 but I think its gonna be closer to 6.0 because those times were a little short of 660'.

They are dial in classes so doesn't matter what times it runs I just like faster better.
