I agree what do you expect your ignition to do when you have 5lbs of keys on there?....I truly beleive some people are just looking to sue these big companies for any reason they can conjure up...

Last week read an article that generally recalls up this year for most brands. Think GM has recently recalled about 2.3-2.7 million autos. They fired two engineers and have hired an additional 35 people to review issues up to ten years old. Their new thinking is to recall vs just issuing service bulletins and waiting for their customers to report issues at dealerships, therefore the higher number of current recalls and expected higher number in the future. Hope the other brands start doing the same.

Does not mean GM products are having more issues. Just means they will be issuing fewer technical service bulletins the general public is not aware of, but will be more proactive by issuing recalls for even minor issues that might result in future problems.

Think this is great and new head of GM is being very proactive. Hopefully the days are past when a $1.50 part won't cause an injury or death because the bean counters thought it was cheaper to pay off a limited number of death and injury claims then it would cost them to issue a recall notice. If anything, this new GM recall process has given me more confidence in GM products.

If you guys think no one else does this on a regular basis, youre nuts. The media just decided to target GM and make an example out of them. For some reason these media assholes hate domestic companies. Its like they want them to go out of business so we are so dependent on other countries for everything we are forced to a one world gov that controls everything everyone on the planet does....

Both sides of this issue was about money, making GM look bad was about someone gaining a better market share, GM deciding to not recall this part was about saving money.

GM is so evil thinking that the average person should be able to control a vehicle if the engine dies....

In the end the consumer will be paying the fine.
Not saying they were wrong or right just think fines, lawyers and the like cost us all money in the end. Even to those that imposed the fines.

GM fined 35 million

Am I the only one that thinks 35 million is chump change for a multi billion dollar company? I mean GM is the most prevalent car brand on the road...

In the late 70's when emmision sanctions were passed Toyota hired 300 engineers while GM, Ford, and Chrysler hired 300 lawyers. American car companies have always played the numbers game. Look at the old Mustangs that basically exploded on rear collision.

I wonder what happens when they have a blow-out or run out of fuel.

except that wasn't what happened. just slightly brushing the steering column would cause the ignition to move to the off position. they have memos from engineers stating that during test drives. and more so than that, when the key was in the off position all the airbags would deactivate. GM ignored those memos, or as they claim, never knew about them.

this is just the tip of the iceberg. there will thousands of civil suits. there are a dozen or so deaths that GM admits were due to the ignition design flaw. NTSB says there could be hundreds. in fact, the feds probably aren't done yet either. the 35 million is the maximum that GM can be fined for failing to report a safety issue. unless things have changed, the justice department is still investigating and may bring criminal charges against the company. if they do that, and GM has to pay a fine to make it end, the fine will probably be larger than the 1 billion Toyota had to pay

Reminded me of this scene from the over-the-top comedy "Top Secret".

They'll be fine. It'll hurt some but like Toyota with their 'unintended acceleration' issue (that they also denied and were slow to react to), they'll come through it. Remember the Ford Explorer / Firestone tire fiasco? The deaths related to that issue were farrrr more than this. I don't remember exactly who was at fault on that one, they were pointing fingers at each other.

Dread Zeppelin had a video that showed how the band before it was Dread Zeppelin (The Reggae Blades) met Tortelvis (DZ's singer). It involved a milk truck kissing a Pinto's bumper.

Oh and by the way- Dread Zeppelin! Even Robert Plant likes them

The media rarely reports the full story of the deaths in the recall. The teenager in Wisconsin that died in a Cobalt crash back in 05 or 06 that has turned into the face for the recall, well she was doing 70 in a 35, not wearing a seat belt, oh and she was drunk. How is that GM's fault? How that family even has the audacity to file a lawsuit with the liability shield in place and their last lawsuit before the shield going nowhere is beyond me.

As far as sales goes so far the data suggest that it hasn't hurt at all. They'll be fine. Just have recall expenses and civil penalties to worry about.
