Volt

So, though I highly doubt I would ever do it...I was still curious about trading in the SS for a Volt. In fact, I've always leaned more towards Tesla and the Sedan that'll be out in 2012 if I ever went that route. And, an electric car would be a daily driver, and not a longer cruising car. So I'd almost certainly hang on to the SS if I decided to go electric.

Point is, I went to the Chevy site to check out prices and options.

And, though it lists the base model at $32,780, there's no way to build one for less than 40k. The two showing in my area (within 500 miles, one of which is in Portland)...were 49,000 and 50,000 each. Anyone know what's up with that? I know that they are in short supply, so it's a dealer markup, but still...

The $32k is the price after the government rebate for buying a low pollution car but you won't see this money until you do your taxes.

The Volt is about $40k from GM and around here in California where they actually have them on dealer lots, they are being marked up HORRIBLY. I routinely see them for $50k+ to START with.

I think they are nice but $40k is overpriced to begin with, IMO and the dealer markups on them are just beyond belief.

Don't forget to look into the cost of the charging station! And the install, as I think you have to have electrical work done

Oops, just wiki'd it and it looks like no charging station is required. Maybe I was thinking of the leaf. Oh well, I don't see the big deal about the volt, it's just another hybrid!

You don't need electrical work done. The charging station from Chevy will plug into a standard 120V receptacle. There is a 240V one, and that is the one you would need to have professionally installed by a electrician to meet city code. The only difference is charging time.

I think the Volt looks great and I wouldn't mind driving one at all. I just enjoy performance vehicles and I'm not rich enough to afford a daily+performance weekend car. One day perhaps.

If you or anyone else for that matter is thinking about buying a Volt they may want to hold off for a little while and get a better price according to the GM-Volt.com blog.

http://gm-volt.com/2011/02/02/as-vol...owering-price/

"GM has plans to continue building on the Volt’s momentum. In addition to new plans to build 25,000 Volts this year and up to 120,000 next year, the Volt team is highly focused on reducing costs. After all with demand at $41,000 it is certain more would be sold a a lower price point. GM CEO Dan Akerson has charged his team with taking at least $7500 in cost out of the car by its next generation. With the federal tax credit still in place that would put the car well below $30,000 and in the reach of a far greater amount of people."

I was trying to be clear in my original post that it is doubtful I would even consider getting rid of the SS to do this.

I've been curious too. The rebate is the kicker...up to $7500. I wonder when that's going to run out (it will make the Volt a lot less attractive).

However, VERY attractive is driving around in one of the most unique and technologically advanced cars on the road, and in my case, I wouldn't have to pay a single cent for gas since I could complete my commute on battery power only. That starts adding up...seeing how I paid $61.00 for a full 15+ gallon tank of gas today for the Jeep...
