New injectors....To Tune or Not to tune...
Ok, I'm definitely a novice with all of this tuning stuff. I'm getting ready to turn up the wick on the Whipple, and as such, am going with larger injectors, multiple fuel pumps, etc.
So, here is the question. Since the new injectors come with calibration/characterization data, wouldn't this data give the ECU what it needs to be able to use the new injectors, without necessitating a re-tune? |

No,
Your ECM will need to be scaled with the proper injector data |

Isn't the proper injector data usually included with the injectors (FAST, Siemens DEKA, etc.)?

Like Tampa said your ECW will need to be scaled with the correct data for the injectors

What they are telling you is that the calibration data will have to be loaded by the tuner into the tables and then the tune loaded into the car. The same will probably be true for the new fuel system.

Correct. There is a good excel spreadsheet online somewhere for guidance, but always have to re-scale.

Thanks for the clarification. Perhaps I didn't phrase my original question correctly. I know that the new injector data will have to be uploaded into the tune, then flashed into the ECU. I definitely wasn't aware of the scaling piece. I recently purchased HP Tuners, so that EVENTUALLY I'll be able to handle some of this for my own car, rather than dropping $$ every time a change is made. I respect the amount of skill it takes to properly tune one of these cars, any car for that matter. I'm just trying to figure stuff out while I'm sitting over here in the desert. Got another 8 months to plan out my upgrades for when I get home.
Thanks for the info, fella's. |

In theory, you could install the larger injectors and have no issues with no tuning changes other than the data that is necessary to replace in certain tables using HP Tuners. This is assuming the data you are given is accurate.
This is useful to know if you wanted to do the work at home or at your schedule and have you car ready for a complete custom tune to be done at a later time. Otherwise, it would be less of an effort and safer to install the injectors and any other mods all at once and do a complete dyno tune at the same time. This will insure there are no tuning related issues immediately after you make changes to the car. I installed my injectors and did an initial tune that consisted of injector data only. I then drove the car around as my daily driver until my tuner expert was available to address the other tuning needs I had. All went well because i was lucky to have good data for the injectors. I have read that not all injectors have the same quality of data and you should do some research. Read up on HP Tuners forum website. Also, there are some really nice companies here that provide tuning files for the parts they sell. I realized this after buying a bunch of parts. You could benifit from buying from one of them that include tuning support...getting a tune to match you parts at the same time. I think Jannety is one of them. |
