Can you explain this? Would they already have a trademark for ZR1?

Do they expire?

They can. A lot of times companies will file to protect old trademarks, although I've read it's difficult to do so without actually using them these days.

I think they expire 10 years after you first register it, which in the case of the ZL1 aught to be coming up very soon.

Like "GS" which was the name of a Buick model back in the '70s.

Now you see it on a Lexus.

So I'm sure they rush to reapply then before someone else scoops it up?

They trademarked Chevelle a while back. Just because they reacquire the trademark, doesn't mean they are going to use it.

Mopar also trademarked "Cuda" and "Barracuda" I believe...still nothing on that front.

I strongly feel that a modern version of the 1967-69 Barracuda fastback will replace the Challenger in the 2019 model year.

Also to cover their asses. Like Ford never re-upped GT40. When the new GT debuted about a decade ago they couldn't call it a GT40 as it was taken by a racing car parts supplier. So they just called it a GT...

Some more generalized terms and numbers you really can't trademark like SE, Sport, etc, etc...for obvious reasons.

GM investing approximately $887 million into Flint Assembly. UAW memo to employees said GM is shifting full size truck volume away from Silao, Mexico to Flint.

I'm not certain it would've been called GT40 anyway. The 40 designated the vehicle's height. The 2005-06 version was 44" tall. Actually, GT44 would've been cool too.
