You should have reported the car sold to your State DMV at the time of sale.
I would still do this. Otherwise YOU are liable for whatever that vehicle has been involved in for the last two years. The shop lein is the only one you know about. There could be more, lots more. For all you know there could be another loan on it. 18k cash? Sounds like drugs or other bs. You could be putting yourself and/or your family in harms way by re-involving yourself with this vehicle. I would steer clear of it. Bad mojo. JMHO

Did you ask how long it was at this shop?
If it has been insured and driven somehow, then it may still be insured under someone elses name. |

What if the guy that couldn't be bothered registering that car in his name is driving through a school zone and kills a kid? Do you think the parents of that kid are going to let you off the hook? You need that car out of your name or in your possession. |

I'll give you $2000 for it, pay the bill and keep the change.

Smugglers/runners don't pay full price for a car.

I had a similar, but a little different type of situation. Got divorced from first wife, judge awarded her the car I bought that she was driving. About a couple years later I got a letter in the mail from a lawyer, stating they were looking to collect damages for a farmer, seem the car had been driven by her mom one day and she spun out on a highway into a cornfield taking out some of the crop. Well I called the lawyer up and explained to him the situation of not owning the car, even though they didn't get the title in her name, and they said we'll no longer bother you. You accepted payment for the car and signed the title over, it would be best that the shop do what is necessary on their part to collect either from that guy or to eventually gain ownership and send it to auction, less hassle as far as legality is concerned.

So turns out the car is at a towing service and not a shop. It has no keys. So who knows why it was towed or what mechanical condition it is in. he told me good condition which I know now is purley visual. Also which bugged me is the guy refused to take pictures of it and send to me...lazy? Who knows

In your state do you not use a notary for title transfer & a new registration for the new owner to make it all legal and avoid problems like this from occurring? I would not want any part of getting this car back. You sold it it is not yours any longer and who knows what the story is, a previous post mentions possibly a drug running car, very possible....who's boss buys them a Camaro? LOL . Don't attempt to get this car back if you do you are opening yourself up to a world of potential problems.

Buy it back for 1700!!!! It's what everyone saying not to do it would actually do if it was them. They're just jealous they don't have that kind of luck. But ask a lawyer for sure

Sorry but I surely wouldn't chase after this car. You open yourself up to a legal issue since you are NOT actually the owner. The towing company, since that is WHO has possession of the car needs to do the right and legal thing, as for gaining ownership and sending to auction, if the guy doesn't show up that bought it.
