Overheating?!

Apologies in advance if this been discussed before.

As i was parking this even a message on the screen saying AC is off due to high engine temperature came on. Short drive home, about 2 miles. Wasn’t pushing it or anything. Coolant temp was at the max, every other gauge was reading normal. Fans stayed on for a bit after i turned off the car. Nothing is leaking and the hot doesn’t seem to be any hotter than it usually is.

Any ideas?

Fans are working though. It is a new lingenfelter 174 tstat though. Has been trouble free for a couple months and about a 1000 miles. I’m also under an impression they don’t usually go bad.

Will check in the morning. Didn’t want to open it while it’s hot.

Air in system could cause this as well.

I had the same thing last spring. It ended up being the thermostat was stuck open.

Checked the coolant this morning and it was way below the min line, pretty much at the tip of the stick. Will add some and report back.

So to update. Checked the coolant in the radiator this morning and looked dry through the hole, overflow tank was dry as well. Went and bought some dexcool, used about a quarter of the standard bottle (assuming it’s a 1 gallon) between the radiator and the overflow tank. Waited for it to warm up, the temps went up to 203 idling and stayed there. Fans kicked in at around 198-199 and the temps idling were between 199 and 203. Drove to work, the temps were falling to 190 and below. Couldn’t do more than two blocks at a time due to the traffic lights.

There was a small puddle under the car, but not sure if i spilled some antifreeze or the car puked out the excess.

What’s the word? Am I good or no?

I’ll be watching the temps and fuel levels, but as of now, everything seems to be normal.

Your temps are normal but keep an eye on the level, if it keeps dropping or you keep seeing it on the ground you're losing it somewhere. Check when cold before you start it for a few days.

Yeah, just keep an eye on the coolant reservoir. It may go down some as coolant level adjusts. The early models had a bit if an issue with the oil cooler line that got crossthreaded in the block. Very slow leak, but can be a contributing factor.

This is an important detail to check for. A lot of times this detail gets overlooked. The best way to eliminate air pockets is to start the car and idle it until it reaches the thermostat opening temp. That will get the coolant flowing in the system. From there, add coolant/ distilled water (NEVER use tap water) until it's full. All air will be displaced by the coolant if this is done properly.

Will be checking the fluid, any puddles and temps.

I had the car warm up and watch the fluid in the process, it went down some and then stayed at the same level.

Thank you all!
