IMO stick is the only way to go for an american muscle, not only image wise but performance, being able to hold gear through peak rpm before slammin into next gear.

Let's look at when the Camaro will be coming out. Sometime between fall '07 as an '08 or fall '08 as an '09. Whatever. The thing is is that with the desire of the administration and Congress to raise the CAFE rating on automobiles, it would be my best guess that the six speed auto will be standard reguardless of engine options. The transmission speeds will be a real factor in all cars for the next several years. That is why Audi has developed the variable speed transmission, and Lexus now has an eight speed in their LS series cars. Chevrolet has already changed the shift points on some of their cars to more real world driving habits. My point! Don't be surprised if we don't see either seven speed manual / automatic trannys in the near future, or we will pay a price for high HP V8's.

Well, GM is quickly on way to achieving their goal of a 6-speed in everything, save for some manuals in lower end 4-cyl cars, so for the Camaro it should be a 6-speed auto and 6-speed manual across the board.

On the Camaro concept web site it says 6spd auto, which I find rather peculiar because no official info has been released on production car specs. To the point; most likely six speed AT for me, I do too much driving to be shifting my legs around on a daily basis.

Transmissions? Thoughts please
If there is one single problem of choice I am having with this Camaro, it's the transmission.
I have heard that they are putting in a 6 speed manual short-throw, or the 6 speed Auto-stick similar to that it the Holden Commodore and the Saturn Aura. My 79 has a 3 speed auto trans. and it goes when I tell it to. But in the 5th Gen, do I want the Auto-stick or the short-throw? What do you want and why please... |

It has been discussed here a bit before but if the stick had more gears than the auto, it would make MY decision a little tougher. But, especially living with So Cal traffic AND a 6 speed auto WITH paddle shift? I'm all over it.
As I had posted before, I'm getting older and lazier so I'll let the trans do the shifting.. Ken |

6spd w/ short throw is what I have now and am used to (and I love it). For a true driving experience, day in and day out, this is the only way to go.
