So....it costs $160 just to update your Nav??

I thought this was a free update? Guess I was wrong?

There has to be a way to jailbreak these things.

I have never seen a free MAP update on GM vehicles. Plus, I would rather use my phone then any factory navigation.

All of my standalone GPS units have lifetime free map updates. Some units come with that, others you have to buy the lifetime package (around $100).

Call phones can be problematic sometimes because of either spotty cell coverage and/or the high battery usage that GPS requires.

but with gmaps you can "offline download" any area you know you'll be visiting, and then you won't need cell coverage to have GPS. The high battery usage, just plug your phone in with usb and use android auto / apple car play, charges and gives you your maps right on the display, just like a factory app would.. but free.

indeed.

embrace android auto. Stop playing with your phone while driving and stop paying for redundant services and features that you already paid for when you purchased a cell phone.

it's easy and almost always works better than any alternative out.

That's what I do when I go offroading in the mountains and way out west.

So a question, when there is an GPS we must pay for it? I could not find any info about that when I purchased my 2LT. Like everyone says not worth paying when you have Google Maps.

Last question what about during the first year as my 2LT is a 2017 so maybe I would get free update with in that first year?

Thanks
Christopher

That works if you have space on your phone AND you happen to know you'll be off the grid ahead of time and think of doing it.

This can work. Some chargers will keep up, and some will not keep up, depending on the specific items. It can also be the case that the phone will overheat and shut down.

So, yes, you can use a phone in many cases. I prefer a dedicated GPS unit, whether it is built in or added on. YMMV.

I've regretted my purchase every time I've paid for an upgrade to the GPS.

Has anyone tried hooking a laptop to the head unit and looking at the files?

Yes, but the maps are typically small, something like 20-50MB depending on the area. Your web browser cache is typically several times the size of that.

When I bought the car, I had a cool 15 hour drive home to test this out. Broken out into an 8 hour leg and a 7 hour leg, in both cases the car was able to charge my phone up to 100%, and I didn't have any overheating issues. That's running Gmaps + play music, pushed over android auto. (Galaxy S7E)

I now have an iphone 7plus, it has no issue keeping that charged either.

but yes, results may vary

I've been using Android Auto in my 2017 50th Anniversary 2SS every time I drive it (literally...first thing I do when I get in the car is plug in to the USB cable and select the AA icon. Then, Pandora starts up, I select Waze, and I'm off and running!).

My phone always stays charged, and I have had no overheating issues at all. Like someone mentioned earlier, it works 99% of the time. When it gets finicky, I just restart my phone and it's perfect again! I did my research on Android Auto before I bought the car and it drove my decision not to order the factory navigation package.

Give it a try!
