Now that Motor Trend tested a non R GT350, lets compare it to their SS manual test...

This is a good comparison as they both were tested by the same magazine, and are both manuals.

As tested the SS was nearly TWENTY grand less and basically matches or beats it in nearly every performance category...and the GT350 was a track pack.

Dam that's scarey close especially considering the GT350 will likely cost the buyer another 20K to cover dealer profits.

Track times should be very, very close - very impressive given that big price differential.

It's likely that a GT350 with the track pack would have more stamina on track, running longer before heat issues required a cool-down.

Handling is very close but the upper rpm hp of the 350 will give it the advantage in the straights.

Pretty sure it would take some tires on thecamaro totruly keep up after a few laps but that's still damn impressive. I can't wait to here the defense panel on this one.

I think it would depend on the road course honestly but then I would still give the edge to the 350. Big factor being tires but also the pull on the top end (especially a course with long straights). Then again I haven't driven either car on or off a road course so what the hell do I know lol.

I got the 350 a small advantage due to tires, better top end power, and you might consider the brakes as well. Otherwise, I think the SS is very close. Closer than the price difference suggests.

Put tires on that SS, with the upgraded brakes and suddenly I think the cars are pretty much equal, with the very slight top end advantage the 350 would have. But the SS would still come way under the 350 in price.

Not to mention it, but without the track pack, I'm not even sure the 350 would last as long on the track without overheating as compared to the SS.

Someone REALLY needs to make this comparison happen. lol

The smaller tire, run flat equipped Camaro is in a dead heat with the gt350 track pack.

On a road course I would still have to give the edge to the 350TP. The HP advantage, tire advantage, brake advantage. Yes the SS should be close, but I think the 350TP would still have the edge.

I agree, but not a $15-$20k advantage.

Both the base (non MR) and tech pack GT350, were said the to be able to handle roughly 20 minutes of HPD (track driving) before any cooling issues arrive. If they do arrive, the car will protect itself (ie limit performance) to prevent issues. I believe the vette does this too. There are an incredible amount of variables to this though (track conditions, DRIVER, track) so there is a plus/minus. I think the biggest is the driver, as most folks aren't going to be able to flog these cars like a pros.

I think the Camaro will hold it's own on the track and will be nipping close to the base or tech pack. Braking, engine and tires is where I think the GT350 should have the advantage at the track. It's cold here so no track racing till the Spring (at least in my area).

Don't be goaded into magazine racing right now. I think as more of both cars see the track, we will get a better understanding of each cars strengths and weakness.

IMO, 20 minutes is not enough. Yes, most owners never track the car, and if they do it will be under that timeframe...BUT, the car should be able to take more then 20 hard minutes if you ask me. One thing is that you can usually make a few changes to solve this. Bigger radiator, more coolers, etc. I mean look at the GT350R-C race car, it is nearly identical to the street car, with just a few minor changes, and it can run full bore for the duration of a race with a pro driver without breaking a sweat.
