MPSS 285(f) and 295(r) - Anyone ?

As a form of easy-find thread, who has gone with the Michelin SuperSports
using the stock 285's front but did 295's (tad smaller) in the rear...and what results.

Think you are only decreasing .3" in the rears (28.4->28.1), but with the 105Y load (Ferrari) the support weight is a bit better. Any pics would be nice also. TX.

sounds like a reasonable combo. Haven't decided what way to go after goodyears, which won't be voted back in!

Looking at the specs, the difference is minimal in all aspects...even RPMs is only -5 difference from the 305's. The MPSS's I believe will be a huge positive if you are a road course person, also based on past experience. (In fact this past weekend we had a our monthly mountain drive, and a guy with a C6 went from GY's to MPSS's and said it was like having a new car). I may just wait a month or so, and if by May there are no 305's I will just try the 285/295 combination.

Anyone with an update of any kind? (The GYs are soon to be replaced, and after a few track events, come that 15min+ mark into the 20 they start to suck-wind). The 295's are only -.3 different in diameter (28.4 > 28.1). The MPSSs are still my target BUT, the Hankook Ventus RS3-2 (version2 that is) look promising but no reviews posted out there yet.

I ran the OEM Goodyears and really liked them, lasted 15K for me, had good grip in the summer but had loud road noise. When they went out I replaced them with MPSS 295f/315r, comparable grip, good in the winter as well and lower road noise. I just replaced my rear MPSS's in 315 tire size after 6K miles, fronts are still ok. I track and autocross my car 1-2 times a month. The 295's will fit the rim but haven't seen anybody using them on the back and don't expect any 305's anytime soon if at all.

This taken from Michelins site is useful as well:
For high-speed driving, additional inflation pressure and possibly reduced tire loading and/or upsizing is required. In the absence of specific recommendations by the vehicle manufacturer, use the following guidelines based on those in the European Tyre and Rim Technical Organization Standards Manual.

For speeds over 160km/h (100 mph), load and inflation must be adjusted according to the table below.

(Y)-Speed Rated Sizes:
Maximum Speed (mph) 118 124 130 136 143 149 155 161 168 174 180 186
Inflation Increase (psi) 0 - 0 - 0 - 0 - 1.5 - 3 - 4.5 - 6 - 7.5 - 7.5 - 7.5 - 7.5
Load Capacity (% of max) 100 100 100 100 100 100 100 100 100 95 90 85

For speeds above 186 mph (300 kph), consult your vehicle manufacturer.

A good tire to look at which I'll be trying next is the BFGoodrich g-Force Rival in the same 295f/315r configuration, if you don't hit speeds over 168 you would be good in them. I'm trying them for two reasons. 1. Extreme Tread Edge (ETE) shoulder design wraps the tread compound farther down the sidewalls for predictable feedback and maximum cornering grip from start to finish. If you track your car then you know that we have an issue with the tread edge quickly disappearing. 2. The guys running them in our local autocross are at or near the top of the list. See following video of a Corvette taking 1st place in PAX at our last event using those tires:

Cool video
I drag racing they make us roll up our windows (and it reduces drag anyways), but I see they don't mind you keeping your windows rolled down for autocross.
Are there any rules about leaving your windows up or down for autocross?

Thanks, the windows have to stay down for autocross but the sunroof doesn't matter.

I don't understand going smaller in the rear when the 315 with the same load rating fits...

I currently have some 315's mounted on 11" Modulare H1's and the while the wheel is wider by a bit, on an 11" wheel, the wall of the tire is straight up and lacks the lower profile roll over the top. As soon as I remount the factory wheels, I will experiment with a wider barrel on the 3 piece wheel. If I can stretch the outside of the tire by mounting on a wider rim, I am thinking I can get the tire profile of the 315 to match that of the 305.

just my 2 cents

I have the Michelin 295/285 setup on my ZL1. I just installed them this weekend and I'm satisfied so far. They definitely are not as grippy as the GYF1's in my short experience this far. Three cruises with some spirited back roads driving.

The 295 Michelins are a half inch wider and a less than a half inch shorter in my unscientific measurement test side by side on OEM 5 spoke wheels (I have two sets of wheels and tires).

I only wish the GYF1's were not so brittle in the cold temps. I would definitely use them year round if I could. However, I am satisfied with the Michelins and I know I'll be happy this winter when I sneak the car out of the garage on nice days.
