DETROIT -- General Motors is re-assessing some trim and build options for the Chevrolet Camaro in an attempt to increase sales and better compete against the Ford Mustang and Dodge Challenger, according to product chief Mark Reuss.

The company, according to Reuss, sees opportunities to better position the muscle car's price points at the base and V-8 levels.

"I think we've got opportunities at the very low end of the Camaro range and some remix of some of the V-8 options on it so we don't force people to buy all the options with a V-8, just to get a V-8," Reuss told reporters following a media at the company's world headquarters here to unveil a new Camaro ZL1 race car for the Monster Energy NASCAR Cup Series.

Reuss, executive vice president of global product development, purchasing and supply chain, declined to comment on specifics or timing of the potential changes. A Chevrolet spokesman confirmed the brand is "exploring a bunch of opportunities" to expand the vehicle's range, but also declined to comment on specifics.

I'm all for any moves that get people into a Camaro... unfortunately, I love the 2SS so unless they lower the price nothing changes for my V8 obsession.

The issue is and will continue to be "buildable combinations". Assembly plants run more smoothly when they have fewer buildable combinations.

For many car lines, the number of buildable combinations is several 10s of times the annual volume and most combinations are never actually built, but they are accounted for. As a made up example, if the assembly plant knew that every car built with leather would also have an 8" Nav, that makes inventory management a lot easier.

The 1SS still comes with a lot of equipment, for one they could remove the forced RS bits, make it an add-on package, and save a few bucks there.

Could mean a base V8 that is not as track capable and equipped like a 1LS/1LT. All season tires and smaller wheels and brakes, base gauge cluster, 7" radio, halogen headlights, etc.

Yes...

The Camaro SS does come with what the optional Mustang Performance Package is, standard.

No Brembos on base gt.

Maybe remove them to lower price.


Check out these numbers I just came across:

The not-so-good news is that the 2018 460 horsepower base GT—which starts at $35,095

—will require you to dish about about two grand more than the 435-horsepower 2017 model, which had a price tag of $33,195.

On top of that, the GT Performance Package—which adds things like Brembo brakes, summer tires, heavy duty front springs, a strut-tower brace, a larger radiator and a Torsen rear differential—gets a price hike as well, now costing $3,995 instead of $2,995.


It’s worth noting that the GT Performance pack seems to now include a “performance rear wing” and some silver paint on that strut-tower brace, so those could factor into the price increase.

But regardless, this means people like me, who’d really just want a bare-bones GT with Performance Package, would have to drop about $40,000 on a new Mustang versus closer to $37,000 for a 2017 model.

Yep.. That did change on the 6th gen - standard RS on SS.

And the ford performace package - brembos, etc, etc. could come out.

The $3000 2018 Mustangg GT w/ p pack price increase is going to be a huge leveling of the playing field, too.

I'm sure many will. Big block is dead though. It's just not needed anymore due to advances in metallurgy, manufacturing and understanding in chemistry and physics. We can do more with less and without all the weight and heat sink.

Yeah ^good suggestion 5.3 would do wonders..a lot if mod possibilities at an inexpensive coat..
