"Flowtie" for my heritage grill and beer for my horses

The former anyway ... Need not waste beer

Hello camaro5,

I have been rocking a heritage grill on my 2010 camaro since 2011. I have enjoyed the stealth look but recently I've gotten tired of it looking so ... plain. I looked into an SS emblem for the grill but couldn't see spending another $150 or so like I did for the trunk emblem. And THEN to complicate matters further GM came out with that trick looking flowtie. Ugh.

So I was cleaning out the attic the other day and found my stock grill with my stock bowtie. I thought grill, bowtie ... I've gotta go order a flowtie!!! After finding no such luck on the forums I decided to go with plan B and make one. It fit well anyway, because my natural cheapness outweighs my natural laziness. I figured I could do the project on the cheap ...

So I began planning

Step 1:

Get bowtie,

Step 2:

Get vice, Dremel (from my first GI Joe lunch box), cutting and sanding bits for Dremel, metal file, sandpaper, plastic grade primer paint and clear coat. Also glue (I used gorilla glue) and speed nuts from the parts store.

Step 3:

Take a deep breathe and begin cutting. I followed the inner outline of the yellow portion of the bowtie just in case the Dremel jumped and cut the outer chrome portion. This took time and patience (also like a goof I didn't realize the yellow part came out so anyone trying this may just remove this from the get go). I outlined the bowtie area by area and was eventually able to pop the pieces of it out. Make sure to save the rear clips from your trimmings! You will need them!

Step 4:

Sand out the inner portion with a Dremel sanding bit. I also used a sanding bit that was "cone shaped" for the deeper areas. For the corners and flat areas I worked a metal file to maintain the integrity of the points.

Step 5:

Sand with a medium grade sandpaper until your bowtie looks brushed. Make sure to get deep into all of the corners do the paint will adhere.

Step 6:

Prime and paint. I did about 3-4 coats of each product with 3 coats of clear

Step 7:

Taking the original larger clips from the bowtie trimmings, shave any excess plastic off and sand them so that they will adhere to the glue. Glue the clips to the rear upper frame of the bowtie as pictured. Make sure the side with the extra notch on it is facing downward. I used clothes pins to hold them while they dried.

Step 8:

Using your speed clips with the flat side on top and clipped side on bottom attach the bowtie to the heritage grill on one of the slots. Mine held very tightly and when I tried to remove moved the whole bumper so it seems very tight. I used 3/8" speed nuts and widened the mouth ever so slightly with needle nosed pliers. Credits to our1stcamaro for the third photo of the rear (different bowtie same idea).

Step 9:

Enjoy your DIY "flowtie."

This project took me several days as I have work children and no wife (thank god). I really like it and am glad to have taken the risk of chopping up a perfectly good bowtie. I had not seen one done this way so I thought I'd share. And yes I know, a parking lot in Austin did work on my license plate ... That's next to fix ...

Peace,

Pat

Nice work.

I hope you had your children involved in the project. It is great to hand down some good ole fashioned ingenuity.

If its flush against the body I could see where trash/dirt and water could get stuck in there. I don't think I would do that.
