The torque numbers aren't.

Anything is possible with high revving motors.

MotoGP engines were .8 Liters at one time creating 230ish horsepower.

My favorite engine ever built was the V5 in the RC211v MotoGP bike.

280.24 LB/FT of torque seems pretty impressive to me from a 1.5-liter three-cylinder turbo. By comparison the Camaro LLT-V6 3.6-liter puts out 273 LB/FT of torque.

I wonder how bad it would lag under regular driving situations

Either way, it's pretty amazing work by Nissan...too bad they aren't making a cheap RWD coupe, that's what we really want

And don't forget the turbocharger either. A few bar of pressure & you can make an awful lot of power out of a small engine.

I would hope a turbocharged engine can make way more torque per litre than a naturally aspirated one, otherwise whats the point?

Considering the disparity between the horsepower and torque numbers, this thing must rev up to the heavens. I'm not all that impressed with any of the numbers except for the weight. As for comparing it the to camaro's V6, one is a racing motor, the other is a production car motor.

The article said it redlined at 7500 RPM, so I don't think that's a terribly high revving motor.

Quote:
Revving to 7,500 rpm, the Nissan DIG-T R produces 380 Nm of torque. At a ratio of 10 horsepower per kilogram, the new engine actually has a better power-to-weight ratio than the new engines to be used in the FIA Formula 1 World Championship this year.

Man, I just busted out some quick calculations... It has to make that 280ft-lbs torque at 7500 rpm in order to produce 400hp... Talk about peak power numbers... It's a little more impressive at that rpm, but the weight is still the most impressive part imo (88lbs).

Make it four and you're still less than the weight of any engine in a Camaro. Gotta hope some of that tech makes it down to the real world.
