Boost+shitty tune=BOOM
So my car blew up. Like really blew up! It ventilated the block. Long story short. I had it tuned locally and thought all was good and the car ran great. It even got in the 11's on street tires. However while data logging and checking it out for another trip to the track. It sent the rods out the block. I'm not sure why but I've had a couple people look at the tune and it was deemed junk. Nonetheless I'm building a iron block 6.0 with forged internals and going with a different tuner. I haven't even touched the car but I will be pulling the motor to check out the carnage soon. Hopefully the heads and top end is fine. I told the tuner my engine blew but I didn't tell him his tune look suspect by others yet. He already was defensive and said his tune wasn't to blame. I was only seeing 7 lbs and 11.4 AFR. This thing should of lived longer SBE or not. It sucks but I'm looking forward to building the new motor and Send it!

Yes lots of E85. I'll be redoing the fuel system this winter.

What did the other people say that was suspect about the tune?

7 lbs and 11.4 afr sounds mild to be throwing a rod.
Was the piston gap too tight for boost maybe? What rpm was the engine when it let go?

It was SBE. There was alot of things wrong with the tune. I'm not a tuner nor try tuning myself but I was told too much timing was one and fuel maps was all wrong.

Too much timing is definitely bad and will cause knock which can damage an engine. If that’s the case and he removed the knock safeguards put there by the factory, then I suppose it’s possible. Tuners do dumb things like copying the high octane table to the low octane table and desensitizing knock sensors.

You say you were data logging when it blew, so how much timing was in it? Was there knock retard? The answers are in that log, post it up.
I dont understand how people can trust someone with their car for $500 and not even check the tune out. You dont have to know how to tune to have common sense. You already know 7psi is ok, and 11.4afr is ok, so you should know about how much timing and how correct fuel trims look. Trust and verify...

I looked at his tune. There were multiple rookie tuning errors. Timing tables had 18 to 21 degrees of timing under boost, MAP offset had not been corrected for the 3 bar MAP sensor, Power enrichment was way too slow coming in. The MAF curve wasn't tuned for anything higher than five to six pounds of boost. All in all, a really bad, incomplete tune. High Octane table copied and pasted to the Low Octane table, which you should NEVER, EVER do.

and many many many big name tuners will copy your hi to low octane tables if you are running E. If the tune is setup right, it will reference other timing tables to lower timing. Has anything on the setup changed since it was tuned? Did those changes get communicated to the tuner? I'm just saying people are always quick to blame the tuner. and its usually people who dont know how to tune. Show us the log.

That’s such a tragic story. I feel bad for you Superman. I gathered everything for an LSA conversion but all the parts sat in my garage for 6 months because I was afraid to pull the trigger. I was worried about something going boom, I’m at 90k miles on the car. So I sold all the parts, uninstalled. I have second thoughts but your story makes me glad I did.

Not my place to say who did his tune but had asked before and will tell you it was a local tuner I doubt you'd ever encounter
Really feel bad for Superman as he was working toward such a nice build!

It's all good. Its definitely a learning experience! An expensive one. Unfortunately I didnt start looking at the tune until it was too late but I am moving forward and building a new short block and hope to be swapping it in soon. Glass half full kinda shit lol.
