Opinions: Thinking of swapping my c6Z06 for ZL1

Like the title states, current 2006 C6Z has 35k miles, LTs and full exhaust. 2017 ZL1 has 22k miles and is bone stock. Both cars in good condition.

The deal: I would trade my car plus 10k cash.

Is this ZL1 a 10k dollar upgrade? Why? Which car is more fun on the street in stock form?

I’ve never been in a c6z myself. But my own light research over time and internet data shows that these two cars are great performers for their $. Your car is the only other sports car I would consider going to if I had to move away from my Z. Or go back to an LT1 as that is also the same ball park value wise. Honestly you are definitely getting $10k worth of upgrades the only down side I could see is the weight difference

I think that’s a great deal for you. Does your Z06 have the original heads? I’ve had a few c6 Z’s and they are great cars but not close to a ZL1. I still have a Z06 and is a blast to drive but not as much fun as the ZL1. It’s hard to compare the C6 Z generation to the current ZL1 generation. The ZL1 is a far superior car.

You would probably haft to talk to someone that has owned both, The ZL1 definitely has a better chassis, the alpha platform is great, toque and power everywhere, but a C6 LS7 that motor will go down in history as the biggest, most rawness motor of all time.
If you get the ZL1 you will be happy, but man 10K put in that Z06 ! A bunch of guys here might get upset, I would put a big cam, headers, mast intake, bigger throttle body, and heads on, I believe 10K will cover that, if not leave the heads off, Ethier way your probably 630-650 hp wheel with light weight of 3300-3400 pounds, it would take a 750 wheel hp ZL1 to keep up with it. Port fuel injection etc is cheaper than a LT motor direct injection, I guarantee the guy getting the corvette knows this. Take care it's a hard decision.

Ive had both, just bought a 17 ZL1 a few days ago, had a C6Z for awhile. Both are indeed awesome cars ,was looking at another 1 right before i bought this one but someone else bought it and kinda helped me decide lol.The ZL1 is a much smoother ride with all the conforts more refined in a way. The vette i was looking at was a head ,cam, intake car , if it was stock I wouldn’t have been as interested. But owning the Zl1 for a couple days i think i made the right decision. Thats my 2 cents. Good luck

I currently have both, the ZL1 is completely stock A10 where the Z06 has cam, head work, LT, fast intake and of course 6sp
As others have said the camaro is more refined, planted, confidence inspiring and fills my quest for performance.
I find the vette to be as performance oriented but has a more brutal feel. Could be because I sit lower in it, its lighter and the 6sp.
There both fun as hell to drive.
With that being said if i had to sell and choose one to keep it would be the ZL1 hands down.
It just does everything well….

The heads are fixed on my car. I agree it is hard to compare. I feel like monetarily it’s a pretty good deal if I wanted to upgrade. Strike while the iron is hot kinda thing. Not sure how much more value will drop on the ZL1.

Congrats on the ZL1. Everyone says it’s more refined…but does that take away the excitement?’

Thanks for the responses. Sounds like a few of you definitely agree the ZL1 has smoother suspension/more refined. That’s a reason I’m considering making the switch….here’s where I’m at, opinion and experience appreciated.,

1. the Z06 is pretty harsh on anything other than super smooth pavement. I’m considering coilovers if I keep the vette which closes the price gap another $2500. Not sure if coilovers will make the car improve enough though. And then lastly, the seats are awful in the C6Z. C7 seats will cost me another 2grand.

2. I love the raw N/A LS7 and the light feel. I’m ok with gaining the weight of the ZL1 but I don’t want to lose the crazy awesome torque and that hit feeling with acceleration. I will not mod the ZL1 past an intake and pulley so for those that drive both, Does a stock-(ish) ZL1 run and pull like the C6Z?

Thanks for the input.

I would make that trade, assuming you do know the owner/car well enough and the car really is bone stock and trouble free.

For me, a C6 ZR1 would be my only consideration instead of my ZL1. The C6 Z06 doesn't compare at all.

As far as value no one knows what will happen, I would think the Z06 is closer to the lowest values we will see but that’s just a guess. The main differences for me are the chassis and refinement. I think GM did a nice job with the interior of the ZL1 as compared to the Z06, it’s literally generations ahead. The chassis on the ZL1 is amazing, I have the 1LE version and the confidence it gives me is absolutely amazing which is why the ZL1 is more fun to drive. You can’t go wrong with either car and I regularly drive both of them but I always look forward to taking the Camaro out. I also really like to cheat a little bit with the rev match. I use to make fun of it until I started using it. Both cars are monsters but the supercharger power band makes it feel like I’m cheating there too. To compare both I would probably never sell my Camaro just upgrade it when my warranty is up but I would definitely sell my Corvette for a c6 ZR1 or a C8 Z06 when I retire.

If I could only have one it would be the ZL1. Just a much nicer driving experience all around. The Z06's ride rough and you feel like the rear tires are wrapped around your head like a set of headphones.

I was actually set on buying a C6Z...back in 2017 a local dealership had a Black 2007 with 7k miles for 38k. After I drove it, I was ready to buy but I wanted to try and work a deal on fixing the heads. They wanted no part of it...so while I was at the dealership, I test drove a 6th gen SS and was sold. Even the LT1 is as capable as the LS7. Average H/C/I LT1's make 600whp easy on E85 and will run high 9's track prepped. 427 LTx motors are making 750whp max effort NA.

So yeah, a ZL1 with 20k miles for your car plus 10k is a no brainer imo.

Get a C7 Z06...it's a little nuts but in a good way

Little to no risk of oil pump failure as far as I know
