Bigger question is why have a snow/ice mode when the car comes with summer-only tires.

I had an employee (who was about 22-23....?) who DDed his supercharged GTO, and complained his car had no traction during winter, even without snow. I looked at his tires, and sure enough, they were Summer tires. Got him to pick up some winter tires, and he was very happy. |

With decent tires, and especially snow tires like Blizzaks, the Camaro does pretty well less than horrible conditions.

LOL OP apparently has no clue about driving in snow or the fact a Camaro is NOT 2 inches off the ground.
It's all tires and skill. AWD adds to the skill. Snow mode helps minimize wheel spin and maintain better traction, also enhancing skill. So yes OP, people DD Camaros all winter. My SS sedan did wonderfully this winter and we had huge amounts of snow.

As I always explain to my friends, having all season tires is like having a pair of landrover shoes, and think you are good for all occasion. You wear them with your jeans, you wear them for soccer game, you wear them with your tuxedo..... They kinda work.... but they really don't for any occasion, other than with jeans. You need dress shoes, and sneakers separately. Same thing with tires. All seasons tires are good compromise, but can't beat having separate Summer tire sets, and winter tire sets. |

I can attest, in light snow, even with A/S tires, these cars will be ok, even more so with appropriate levels of ESC / TC. Put a set of good snow tires on them, and they are down right "ok" to drive during less-than-blizzard conditions. I took my Mustang out a few times in previous winters, and it was passable as long as you didn't drive like a moron. If the snow on the road is above your door sill, you might want to take a vacation day, or drive something taller!

I daily drive a 04 GTO in Wisconsin. Two sets of factory rims. One with summer tires and the other with true winter tires. My rear driver car with winter tires is better in 6" of snow than my wife's FWD with all season tires.
Plus... Its doesn't snow every day. We might get six to eight heavy events per year and only a percentage of those happen during rush hours.

I found driving in snowy/cold weather on summer only tires is risky; and I grew up in Buffalo NY driving rear wheel driver cars in the 70s, 80s and 90s.

because even after the snowplows come through, theres snow on the ground, and sometimes it thaws and refreezes in to ice.
Would I drive it in 6" of snow? Hell no. Would I drive it on 1/4" of snow after the plows come through? Yep. Yep I would. |

The snow setting would probably be pretty good for heavy rain fall too. Rain can accumulate on roads very quickly and leave you with a less than ideal traction situation.

You drive it if that's all you have and have to get to work. My '69 Camaro was my only car when I had it, so I drove it through New England winters. I didn't have snow tires on it, but it did fairly well as long as I drove it sensibly.
