ZL1 1LE Roadtrip

Hello everyone...I just bought a 2018 ZLE and now I am trying to figure out how to get it home. I bought the car in GA but I live in Phoenix and the original plan was to have it shipped, but now I am having second thoughts about it. A specialty enclosed transport is about $2300, and regular transport is about $1100, and there is always the chance of damage. The dealer is trying to find a carrier that can support it but maybe I want to drive it now rather than waiting weeks for shipment.

Would you drive it the 2,000 miles? I am also entering the car in One Lap of America this year (my third time) so the long drive doesn't scare me, but not sure about doing it on the factory rubber. Thoughts?

BTW it only has 800 miles on it and I am coming from a Z/28.

***Update***
Dealer already shipped the car without my knowing because he already had a carrier he used for low and high end cars. Guess my road trip will have to wait till One Lap.

2,000 miles will chew up the stock 3Rs. If you do it, make sure you have a good street alignment. Be prepared for delays due to weather, the slightest amount of water on the road makes the 3R a nightmare to drive on. Speaking of damage, get some sort of bra for the front, or I'm sure it'd be chipped like crazy after 2k miles of highway driving.

Normally, I'd say drive it home. But 2000 miles is a lot of miles for me. Granted, I'll sometimes put 2000 miles on a car in 2-3 years. I'd go pick it up myself with my truck and trailer but that may not be practical for everybody. Specialty enclosed transport probably isn't much more, in fact, less, than a set of 3R tires, 10 tanks of fuel, and a hotel or two.

just drive it - you'll will be completely fine and the tires will be fine as well.

stay off beat up roads - otherwise you may regret driving it!

it rides pretty rough...

If you drive it get some Xpel Tracwrap if you are worried about rock chips. It took about an hour for my wife and I to install it. We drove 2,200 miles from South Texas to Iowa and back Thursday through Sunday. Be careful if you get caught in a downpour, the Goodyears like to hydroplane over 50mph.

It would be I-10 or I-40 95% of the way depending on which route I took. The I-10 route I think will be more favorable with warmer climates. I-40 could get risky though.

My fear was the tires not making it, but it is all highway so that is a pretty easy life for them. I would definitely make sure I get a good road alignment though, then set it up for track work after I get home.

I could also do the blue painters tape thing...lol.

LOL...that is impressive! And at only 500miles...makes me feel guilty for the 8-9k I am going to put on it this year. It will definitely get a clear bra.

Don’t drive it. I did this and it was a nightmare. There were about 50 chips in the bumper and going through New Mexico almost home I hit some sort of small animal and it took out the lower spoiler and grille. Tires will also take a beating but still be ok. Just not “new” like they are now. You also run the risk of chipping the windshield or having people park next to it and ding the door. It happened to me. Personally, I would do open air transport and have someone blue tape mod it before. Totally worth it.

PS. It was a blast to drive home, fun car. But it will get damaged somehow.

It will collect damage all of the miles you use it. Take that $1K and get it wrapped before you pick it up.

My advice is don't do it. Call Plycar for transport. You will be happy you did.
