Factory Z28 Wheel Question..

Hello!

Working on having the OE Z28 wheels powder coated gold (nothing crazy...copying the same 'gold/ bronze' that Ferrari uses). Do you guys know if the OE wheels are painted or powder coated?

If they are already powder coated the total cost is less vs having to remove the paint then apply the powder coating.

Also installing Michelin Pilot Sport Cup 2 tires in OEM sizes. I have an Ariel Atom 3s for the track and will use the Z28 primarily scaring cows on Texas rural roads

Don't know about the wheel finish, but you might want to consider Michelin Super Sport tires for every day driving ... the Sport Cup 2 are basically Michelin's version of the Trofeo R. If you were to switch to those you might as well keep what you have.

thanks for your insight about tires. After more research, you are right about not getting the cup 2s. I am reading that they suck in the wet.

Tire Rack is suggesting Michelin Sport 4s or (like you) the Michelin Super Sports.

I haven't had the best luck with the super sports. I run the 325/30/19 on all 4s. I'm on my second set of 4 and I've had 3 fronts bubble up on the side wall. I do run mine on Dallas roads which are hell with the DSSVs. So I don't know if its the potholes or running a 325 on a 11 inch wheel, or some combination ofthe two factors.

Also with my setup of MPSS size I feel like there is a ton of understeer with spirited driving even on the street. I have felt the front push several times in dry conditions that were exciting but uneasy nonetheless.

correct me if I am wrong, but aren't you running a non-OE size? 305/30/19s are the OE tire size, no?

No idea if that would lead to your experience.

Get the Conti Extreme Contact Sports. Trust me. Absolutely the best tire I've driven on. Sticky, 340 treadwear, little road noise. Taking mine to the track on Saturday, but I can already tell just from daily driving that these tires are fantastic.

OP that is nuts, we have rims powder coated all the time, did some sets in the past year and its 1/5 that amount, and yes the old paint is first removed, look for a much better price then $1000.

That's not really accurate. The sport cup 2 are a 180 treadware and the trofeo r are a 60. The sport cup 2 will last almost 3 times longer than the trofeo r under the same driving conditions.

My personal opinion - if you are not daily driving this car and plan on tracking it at least a couple times a year, go for the cup 2. The super sport are an extremely hard compound by comparison and will not serve you particularly well on track. I think to truly appreciate the Z/28 you need to run the right tires. Putting Super Sports on the Z/28 would be like Usain Bolt wearing a pair of orthopedic walking shoes.

Also consider going up to a 315 if you choose to run the cup 2. If you take a look at the stock dimensions of the Trofeo R, you'll see that they are very very wide for a 305. For example, the tread width of the 305/30-19 Trofeo R is 11.6", whereas the 305/30-19 cup 2 has a tread width of 11", and the 315/30-19 cup 2 has a tread width of 11.7"

Just some food for thought.

My point is that they are as poor as each other as an all around tire. I've had the Trofeos on the Z/28, the SC2 ZP version on the Z07, the non ZP version on several 911s and currently on the AMG GTR, I know the tires well. The non ZP version has slightly deeper tread than the ZP, but like all R spec tires still not a good choice for everyday driving other than on dry pavement.

But yes I agree that there is a difference between the Trofeo R and the SC2 (less so with SC2 ZP). That's why on track the Trofeos are great for hero laps but fall of the cliff pretty quickly, and the SC2 make for a slightly less sticky tire but run for longer and more consistently. For the track I personally prefer the Dunlop Sport Maxx over both the Pirelli and Michelin.
