Remington .308 Win. More aftermarket support for Remington and .308 has plenty of ammo options available from cheap (well relatively cheap) plinking ammo to full blown factory match ammo. Get the SPS-V and a decent aftermarket stock, a nice bi pod and good glass, will set you up to shoot 1K yards.

How far are you looking to shoot? What is your price range for the entire package?

Edit: I just read that article. Stupid. Hard to believe people think there's a loophole. Interesting to see how this turns out

Anything around the 500yd range or above is my distance and was thinking of spending no more than$800 max on a complete set up.

Try and get a nice used Remington 700. Make sure you get a quality optic. I paid $700 for my 700BDL, Stainless with a leupold vx-II 6-18. The more money you can spend on the optic the better. A new 700 is about $575 for the SPS. You could look around for a $200 optic, but I'm not sure what would be a good one.

I bought mine in 7mm SAUM, but ammo is absurd. I'd try to get it in .308 due to cheap ammo prices. It will definitely be effective for 500.

I agree, I was hoping to find a good quality used bolt action and use the money I save towards better optics.
